how are they proposing to reduce prison population? Is it time end the Butlins experiment and turn jails into places that no one wants to return to? We should also consider outsourcing prisons for sentences over 6 months.

gawd elp us the brains trust as stirred from slumber, what wisdom we all will be blessed with, alleluia!
One of the major failures of prison as a punishment is that no re-offender ever considers a potential return to prison when they re-offend, so contrary to Michael Howawrd's lofty statement when he was Home Secretary - 'Prison works ...' - clearly it does not work - at all.

so what is your suggestion for criminals then andy?
Should make it such an unpleasant experience that that no-one ever wants to return !
TTT - There needs to be a far more expansive and robust programme of support for offenders to turn their lives around before they leave prison for the first time - that's the only realistic way of stopping them coming back.

A lot of recidivists simply - to quote the immortal Porridge intro - see prison as an occupational hazard - that circle needs to be broken.

The problem is, in common with nursery education, it's not sexy, and it will take more than one Parliament to see any result, so any government will be reluctant to plough money into something when the other side may get the credit when it starts to work.
I would like to see more prisons, with 'short, sharp, shock' sentences for first time offenders that are currently given community service or other punishment.

The first couple of weeks in prison are the worst of the whole sentence and it just might deter 'trainee criminals' from re offending
I'd have thought that if anyone would lend their support to the proposals it would be Liz Truss.
If non-custodial sentences are to be considered then there has to be a major upgrade to the community service lot to ensure that scallies aren't in their pits when they should be out picking up the rubbish they dropped last night.
No more standing around having a fag and texting either, head down, *** up for the duration, otherwise it's all the usual pash from politicians.

Prison is meant to be a punishment not a holiday! Mobile phones, Sky TV, drink and drugs in prison is not a punishment, what on earth is going on?
These latest rioters and future ones, should be left to live in the very mess that they caused, wallow in their own siht for all I care!
perhaps taxpayers will be happy to hand over more money in order to get more prisons, more police and more managers dealing with it all, though my impression has always been that nobody wants to pay any taxes at all. The notion of G4S running prisons, or running anything at all, is crazy, given their total failure to do their job at the Olympics, but they do. I can only assume they do it cheaply.

My colleague is married to the Governor of the prison where the rioting took place and she herself worked there until recently.

She told me there is a prevailing sense on entitlement among today's criminal fraternity and inmates are given Argos catalogues upon arrival to chose their pillows and duvets.

How on earth can the government justify the cuts made to the NHS, the Police Force, etc, and yet these worthless, drug-addled specimens can be given expensive bedding and other such comforts. They should be made to sleep with old army blankets, the little swines.

most child molestersrapists of children and most murderers should be put to sleep .

its these prisoners that need prison more - not death!!

bs, its the likes of you soft fools thats the problem
lol love the insults!
DD, state-sanctioned murder just degrades society.
What we should be asking is what can we do to stop people like you going to prison on the first place.

Was it petty crime that sent you there or something more serious?
My cousin was in a cat B prison and the boredom was enough for him to know he'll never go back. Despite what TTT thinks they aren't holiday camps. They have to earn luxuries. One foot out of place and they lose them.
Prisons are wonderful places to expand one's education, if you are a burglar you can learn to become a master burglar. Drug skills are taught by experts.
Anything your heart desires can be learnt & practised in prison so just leave 'em alone & stop interfering.
