a bit of harmless fun, the "victims" of which seriously need to get a life?

or a genuinely frightening experience warranting the intervention of the authorities?

wow, that was quick work by someone - i only saw the user name for a microsecond....
A thoroughly stupid and dangerous thing to do to anyone - it won't be long before someone gets seriously hurt or worse. These 'clowns' deserve to be taken behind the bicycle sheds and taught some basic good manners.
Nasty & loathsome.

That's all clowns, "real" ones & these creeps.
Not funny. Trust the idiots to copy the yanks !
It`s only a matter of time before one of the clowns gets seriously thumped and that will serve them right.
If it were just children I might understand but one of the idiot's who was arrested is 30.
Groundhog Day!

But I am always up for a similarly polarising debate as the one about 'sexy burkas, so I am prepared to be castigated for having 'no sense of humour'.

Here we go -

The issue I see here is that if you put on a scary clown costume and go out to scare people 'for a joke', you are only going to know if the recipient is amused by your antics after you have 'scared' them - which is rather too late if they react with tears, shouts for help, or batter you senseless.

So some people may be holding their sides, les they split, but someone may invite you to take a ride in an ambulance.

As long as you don your clown costume and hit the streets fully aware that you are playing Russian Roulette with your behaviour, then knock yourself out (or let someone else do it for you!)
Doubt you'll be castigated for agreeing with the majority of us.

It`s a shame he didn`t get whacked with a beer bottle but then that would be a waste of good beer (excuse language) http://www.northdevonjournal.co.uk/regional-news-watch-as-clown-with-hammer-is-chased-off-by-devon-man/story-29789711-detail/story.html

To whom is that addressed please?

To save time - if it is addressed to me, can you explain your point, because I always read any OP and all posts before posting.
You were prepared to be castigated Andy but agreed with everyone.

27 posts before you added yours, andy ... not one of them were in any way defending the actions of these idiots.
So your never made much sense really ... or did it?

That's true, but since some posts can easily past the one-hundred mark, we are barely a quarter of the way through potential responses, and there may be individuals out there who would argue that it is 'harmless fun' - we shall see.
Fingers crossed ...
Know, if the clowns were wearing slippers that said "old" and "git" on them, then, corr blimey, that would be funny.

Comedy gold, I am wiping the tears from my eyes!
I liked it.
