Regardless of height big people have trouble with leg room too. Bulk takes up more space overall. I recall going to the theatre with a friend who, although shorter than me, is much larger. She managed after a struggle to fit her bottom in the seat but her knees were jammed uncomfortably against the seat in front. She had to ask to be moved.
Can't argue once again NJ.

My wife and I each had a jumper in our hand luggage to put on in the terminal at Manchester just before we go outside. We also carry a paperback book each.

I do think that airlines need to start adapting to the changing dynamics of passengers, especially in regard to size, and the amount of stuff that can be carried on board.

A simple way to control that is - each passenger can carry two items in their hands at a time - everything else in the overheads, which are locked on take-off. If you need anything out of your hand luggage, you have to buzz the cabin crew - that would cut down a lot of that nonsense.
I agree that some people take far too much stuff on board, but what does that have to do with the question?
yes, I recommend they are contiguous.
I too have had the misfortune of sitting next to a large passenger and he stank too. Luckily the flight wasn't too long, but it put me off flying for a while!
Fly Yorkshire Airlines....no flies on them.

Ryanair allow 2 bags to be taken on board but only one can go in the locker.
If Islay purchased two seats, as they say, then the other traveller who wanted to sit on one of them won't have paid for that seat, and could choose another.

I can see there could be a point at which someone of excessive weight could be told it was unreasonable for them to expect extra space for the same price; and have to pay a surcharge to use one of the large sized seats available; but double seems pure profiteering (at least in most cases).

And one needs to be careful not to allow the airlines to provide unreasonably little space in order to overcharge most. There should be international rules as the minimum legal space available to all, and maybe guidelines on other sizes that can be made available for the larger individuals.
How about they don't have states allocated till check in and all the obese people sit next to each other.mthey will then know how we feel being squashed I next to them.
Lets play the Friday isms game

This would not be an issue if the airlines especially those attached to the package holiday industry started to specify seats that "normal" people could sit in comfortably. It's all about squeezing as many folk in as possible.

Maybe someone will come along soon advocating the positives of stopping anyone over 8 stone flying. Maybe New Judge will set his weight limit as well.
You'd have to be a pretty hefty weight to spill over. My sister is nearly 17 stone and she fits in a seat just fine.

the problem with buying two seats is that some arm rests don't lift up.

''i would have jumped out''

And your obese neighbour would have thanked you for the extra expansion room... and your in-flight meal.
They should pay, why should a person that sits next to these people have to inconvenienced?
Dive, they should be in the hold.
Let's dispense with euphemisms' big boned' means obese or Fat !
I agree with the idea that at check in both passenger and baggage are 'weighed in' and charged for extra kilos.
what's that going to do apart from make the airline richer, Eddie?
At least this thread has proved that AB has less time for fat people than money grabbing lawyers.
