It seems disgusting that such a thing happens nowadays. Maybe because they are amateur landlords they think they can go against the law.

As I said Disgusting!!!( for some reason the link disappeared )^^
Racism never really went away.
Racism never went away, Mikey, but who among us knew that it wasn't just a white thing?
I'm shocked, stunned, horrified, dismayed, inCREDibly disappointed etc etc that the colored folks discriminate too.

No I'm not.
Just like I'm not surprised that it's actually okay for that to happen.
Mikey, you're right. Look at Togo's link at 07:44.
Racism can be effected on anyone, from any source. But the example given is about racism against black people.

When my Northern Irish Dad was looking for accommodation in London after the war, he came across signs that said "no blacks, no dogs and no Irish"

I doubt there were any similar signs in B+B windows that said "No whites, no dogs, no English" so its not a very level playing field is it ?
Naomi ...if what Togo says is true, than it would appear that there is a serious contravention of the Race Relations Act happening, and I am not even going to start thinking that its acceptable.
Mikey, //I doubt there were any similar signs in B+B windows that said "No whites, no dogs, no English" //

The people advertising in Togo’s link don’t need to say that. Adverts like ‘Asian only’ are even more restrictive. Why do you think they might not be genuine?
"I doubt there were any similar signs in B+B windows that said "No whites, no dogs, no English""

Probably because there were few non-English landlords. Doesn't affect the principle, which is the same across the playing field.
marchwarbles OP is about America innit ?

Unlawful to try to hire a Scottish cook ( race see ? ) but OK for one that speaks scottish or cooks porridge
I mean Jesus we have known that for years

everyone - tear your halos off and get on with satdy morning !

O and the word is letting

letting to whites only - letting to whites only - letting to whites only

[ the whites would be the ones renting ]
easy to remember - Landlords let on a lease
Naomi...I have every reason to think it is a genuine problem, but what are the authorities doing about it ?

Surely if a complaint is made, then it must be investigated ?
The other thing is this idea of "X preferred" being ok. It's basically obscured discrimination since those who are not X will feel inclined not to try, whilst those who are not X but do try are likely to be refused anyway. I think it is difficult to frame a law that allows reasonable preferences to be stated whilst avoiding unfair discrimination.

But the overt discrimination is ridiculous and one would have thought the owned of the ad board would have refused the ad or risk prosecution.
Yeah point taken. Different countries have different rules. Perhaps unfair discrimination is fine in America.
// Surely if a complaint is made, then it must be investigated ?//

haha mikey which planet are you on ? Hillsborough plenty plenty complaints there all ignored - theft - commonly ignored as a 'civil problem' hem hem - BUT historical abuse and war crimes all exhaustively investigated and no convictions
Mikey, //Surely if a complaint is made, then it must be investigated ? //

If I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath.

"Marchwarble's OP is about America, is it?"

No, it started in America. But the whole point of renting out places for a week or so means you want it in more than one country.

BTW I warble in the marsh, not just in March!
sozza - warble on in time and place

from the article
"As Airbnb is based in California, we asked a lawyer there whether Airbnb could be potentially liable in the United States if hosts racially discriminate there. "The Fair Housing Act is a federal statute and it almost certainly applies to a company that's engaged in making housing available on a widespread basis," David Oppenheimer told Trending."

yeah sounds like England all right
//Trending contacted the host in question and he disputed Selden's claims. The host said the reason he had turned down Selden's request was because the requested booking was for a single night and the cleaning required for such a short rental would be a hassle. He added that his wife was in general not comfortable with young male guests staying at the house when he was away. He also said Selden's profile had no reviews.
As a final note he added it "just didn't feel right. It was a gut feeling.. I have hosted African Americans before. That gave him no ground to prove that I'm rejecting him based on his race. He is just trying to victimise himself."//
