"The poisonous atmosphere has been fuelled by right wing hatemongers"? Glad to see this recognised at last...
Now, all of a sudden, millions dreamt of coming here – and we felt flattered. //The refugees made us feel good about ourselves.//

That sums up virtue signalling for you. Seen enough of that recently on AB .
Now the complexities and problems Frau Merkel has invited on her people now come to light. How very short sighted.

It depends who created the poisonous atmosphere in the first place!!

//some never even said “thank you”. One seemed to feel genuinely sorry for us because we have three daughters and no sons. Another asked, apropos of nothing, whether my wife was “a Jewish girl”. //

As a welcoming host I would feel quite insulted if no thanks were offered or quizzed if my wife was Jewish.
Either foolish or naive I think this host took a chance with three daughters although it didn't say if they lived with their parents.
//The poisonous atmosphere has been fuelled by right wing hatemongers//

It has indeed. Another term for them is radical Islamists.

One seemed to feel genuinely sorry for us because we have three daughters and no sons. Another asked, apropos of nothing, whether my wife was “a Jewish girl”. We tried not to read too much into these experiences, limited as they were. But they did suggest that the relationship between Germans and refugees would not be as easy and straightforward as the enthusiasts had suggested.//
//Last month the head of the migration office admitted that up to 400,000 people had not applied for asylum. Which means we have no idea who they are or where they are from. It wasn’t supposed to happen like that//
//But the spirit of the Willkommenskultur – taking in people randomly, exuberantly, without getting to know them and establishing a meaningful relationship – doesn’t feel right any more.//

But we get criticised and castigated if we voice any of these opinions. The 3 stages of truth.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
Arthur Schopenhauer.
400,OOO have not applied for asylum. Why, do you suppose that is? Do they have, perhaps, a different destination in mind?
+thoughtful piece from the graundiad
usual they-will-kill-you-in your-beds comments from the usual crowd

I have to say I gave up giving beds to strangers ( hitch hikers, teenagers ) overnight before 1970 .... they clear the place - well only one has to clear the place and you think "oo-er wont do that again ! "
no togo
suspicion that they will be recorded and followed

[ at which the Germans are also very good ]
oh and if anyone wonders what virtue-signalling is,
it appears to be a long new word for 'pi' ( short for pious - with similar connotations )

and there is a long piece in the Grauniad - where did it come from, where will it go to - here:

I think the fuel for the right wing hatemongers may have been manifested from the attitude of the visitors. I can't say I have witnessed any of the serious crimes but I have witnessed plenty of shoplifting and bike lifting which seem to be the norm. One refugee on being questioned on what was in his pockets headed for the door and just before he went out of the door threw a mango at the cashier, luckily just missing her.

By and large they do not seem to be very grateful.
you missed half the paragraph jno: "....But the adherents of the Willkommenskultur, in my view, are also to blame"
//plenty of shoplifting and bike lifting which seem to be the norm.//

it's the norm amongst the indigenous too. the WM police consider shoplifting to be a civil matter.
you missed this bit too jno: "...Unfortunately, the Gutmenschen have been just as intolerant, denouncing anyone who opposes an open-border policy as racist and worse"

The indigenous people have not been welcomed to safety from a life of total misery. A little gratitude would be nice. Even if they are not grateful they should at least try to be law abiding ... I think that would help their situation rather than hinder it?

Are you referring to West Midlands Police policy (WM) ??
