/// But, in a bizarre intervention yesterday, a human rights activist said the two groups of stowaways should not be called illegal immigrants. ///

/// Nils Muiznieks, a Council of Europe commissioner, said such language was dehumanising. ///

What planet are these sort of people on? You could not make it up.

The military have great expertise in searching vehicles thoroughly. They honed their skills in Northern Ireland and were looking for smaller items hidden in/on vehicles than a human body. The military are trained to man check points.!

Togo,
Those things are being cut by hard up councils who can no longer to payworkers
Retro tells us soldiers are sitting around bored with nothing to do.
Why not get them doing something instead of paying them to do nowt?

I confess I was shocked to learn that army personnel do not have any meaningful tasks to do, but Retro is our resident expert.

/// If you use the Military to plug the gap in the Border guard numbers.....who will plug the gap in the Military if/when it comes to the point when they need to be used in more extreme circumstances? ///

As always certain situations take priority over others.

/// The para-military branch of the Girl Guides, perhaps? ///

That's rather sexiest, also very insulting towards the honourable association of Girl Guides.
I too would have thought more Border Officials but that idea seems not to fit the bill for many here today.

Has it still not got through to you that the Army is ready paid, they would just be deployed on another duty?

And incidental who said anything about arming them, if that is what you and the other lefties are worried about.
Gromit
you are putting words in my mouth and you know I didn't say that.
You would sooner see troops on the street,as in Belgium and Paris now,AFTER a major terrorist outrage may happen in the UK rather than use the military to fill a gap in our border security until more Border agency staff are recruited and trained? I do not see your logic unless you are scared witless that our military may become enthusiastic in their endeavours to find potential threats to our homeland security.

/// then perhaps we should have them working in hospitals, looking after the elderly, or picking up litter. ///

Yes anything apart from that all important job of stopping Johnny Foreigner from invading our precious land.

But obviously that is not all that important to the anti-British Left.

If that was directed at me don't be shy.I may have had a tad more experience in security from terrorism as I have worked with the military and trained with them on many occasions. From the Iranian Embassy siege (RAF Northolt and RCT Barracks Albany Street) to RAF 'Nuts Corner' Northern Ireland. I have worked on security evacuation of the Royal family alongside the military and attended body guard training courses on military bases. I have probably been in more military establishments than you have been to Boots the Chemist.
What is your knowledge of military security, Greenham Common and Aldermaston?

Greenham Common was an interesting 4 weeks of my life, but that's for a separate thread someday.
Balders
My memory of Greenham Common was too disgusting to put to print here. :-(
Once again our glorious leader & his bunch of highly educated yobbos have proved totally inadequate in providing our country with the sort of security we deserve & expect. They have cut everything they can lay their hands on in order to save money with total disregard to the feelings & well being of the public they are supposed to be representing & protecting. I can see no better in the Labour opposition so I really do despair when thinking of our once great nation's future.

That's why I used interesting!
// use the military to fill a gap in our border security until more Border agency staff are recruited and trained //

But the Government aren't planning on recruiting any more Border staff.
They could re-hire the ones who were laid off....all they would require is a brief refresher-course.
Hear Hear JTH well said.
They appear to be letting numbers of guards drop by natural wastage. Old ones are retiring but no new ones are being recruited. So the under staffing is constantly getting worse.

And how could you possibly know that? They well may have to in the future, Cameron has recently called a two day cobra meeting in light of the Belgium attacks.
Why not bring back 'Dad's Army', we could raise a company from ABers perhaps?
"such a menial task."

hahahaha...laugh of the day...so the security of the country is a menial task

what a joker you are, and you want to be taken seriously !?....

youve dug a hole and cant get out , so why not just zip it now, youre only making yourself look more and more stupid if thats possible
