This is something that first came up when Dylan Roof murdered nine black worshippers at the Emanuel African Methodist Methodist Church in Charleston earlier this year.

Do the media subconsciously label acts of terrorism differently dependent on race?

FYI - according to the piece in the Independent, an act of terrorism is:

The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

Give it a rest sp, stop trying to play the race card.

It is not as if these white killers will get off, so what does it matter what they are classed as?

I can only hope you'll be taking your own advice in the future, AOG.

It *is* interesting, sp, isn't it?
I particularly like some of the Social Media comments on the article.
I certainly think the victims of war and terrorist attacks are treated differently depending on race.

Look at the number of TVs programs about 9/11 we have over the years, looking at it from every angle.

Now consider Vietnam where the Americans sprayed Agent Orange all over the place to defoliate the trees to stop anyone hiding under them.

This has caused suffering for hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people since, with deaths and cancer and deformed babies and so on.

But how many TV programs do you see about that?

9/11 gets far more coverage because it was in New York and mostly white "middle class" people died, not poor Vietnamese peasants.

More here

I think actions like using Agent Orange (and other aggressive war like behaviour from the West) has caused much of this IS terrorist activity.

Interesting point VHG, but I really think that America has problems acknowledging Vietnam because it was so divisive...at the time, and long after.

Not bad from someone who's always whingeing, about the poor beleaguered white man.

And I always get taken to task for, so I thought this a perfect opportunity for me to reverse that position.

Or doesn't it quite work that way round?
There's that *** canary again, trying to imitate a parrot.

I think the difference may be that whilst you play the race card on a daily basis (as we can tell by looking at your AB history), neither I or anyone else on AB has quite your 'stamina'.

But leaving that aside - what is your opinion on the story?
I don’t think it has anything to do with colour or race. The men mentioned in the article targeted specific groups with a specific aim, whereas the Boston bombers, like other Islamic terrorists, slaughtered people indiscriminately. There is a difference.

On a Daily Basis eh?

You have made a false accusation against me, if not then please be good enough to provide the proof.
sp, how can the media ' subconsciously label' anything. The media is either written, visual or spoken. How can either of those three 'states' have a subconcious?

Okay - let's not make this rheas about you. Let's just agree that the majority of your news threads are based on race. Is that fair?

If so, turning back to the question at hand - what do you think about how these stories are reported?
sp1814

/// Okay - let's not make this rheas about you. Let's just agree that the majority of your news threads are based on race. Is that fair? ///

At least you have made a U turn even if I didn't receive an apology from you.

Yes I agree like most on here the majority of my news threads have been based on race, if a religion can be so classed. But then the newspaper stories have also been based on the same subject, and this is the news section is it not?

Back to your question now, "what do you think about how these stories are reported"?

Makes no difference what one calls them, just as long when they are found guilty, their sentences are of equal severity. You have said in the past, why the need to report their ethnicity, their colour, their religion etc?

// And I always get taken to task for, so I thought this a perfect opportunity for me to reverse that position. // AOG

o give it a rest AOG

AOG as victim - { I dont think ]

Well to up the discussion - yeah so they are treated differently - Roland Barthes might well say [ Roland whaaaa? who's he when he is at home ? a thousand ABers ask ] this is because the myths they represent are different - so their treatments are different as their messages are different

I don't think that fits.

The primary objective of a mugger is to deprive you of property or money. In itself, it has no political or social remit.

If it makes no difference what one calls these attackers - why is there a difference?

Boston bombers were rightly labelled terrorists.

Why not Dylan Roof or this latest scum bag featured in the Independent story?

Is there an underlying reason that we have all signed up to?
