Only one 'c'.
Just seen the report on the BBC news.

He appears to have shown no remorse for his actions, and when he stabbed Mis Maguire, sat back down with a grin.

I absolutely cannot fathom this story. Apparently he came from a good family, and hadn't previously been in trouble. Intelligent and well-liked.

Awful story - very sad indeed.
It's almost as if he's too immature to realise what he has actually done
Well that's the only way I can explain it
Saying that I don't think he should ever come out though
read the judge's sentencing remarks here
http://www.judiciary.gov.uk/judgments/r-v-william-cornick/
appalling.
Sandy, I'm not sure why you keep saying you think he's ill. Of course he's ill. It was this fact that led the judge to give him the sentence he did.
There are rarely better examples for the reinstatement of the death penalty: no doubt he did it, no doubt he's a psychopath, no doubt he should never be released. The following passage from http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-29879865 is horrific ...

The court heard Mrs Maguire had been leaning over her desk helping a girl with her work when the boy attacked her from behind after winking at another pupil in the classroom.

"The defendant approached his teacher and began to stab her in the neck and back," said Mr Greaney.

"Ann Maguire was 61 years of age, 5ft 2in in height and of slim build.

"The defendant was a full foot taller and was armed with a large kitchen knife.

"To describe his attack as cowardly hardly does it justice."

The prosecutor said Mrs Maguire fled but was chased by Cornick, who was "stabbing her as she sought to escape".

Mrs Maguire was stabbed seven times before colleague Susan Francis, alerted by children screaming, rushed her friend into a work room and held the door shut.

Mr Greaney said: "She was able to see the boy through a glass panel in the door. His face was emotionless and he then walked away."

Cornick went back to the classroom and sat down "as if nothing had happened", the prosecutor told the court.

By virtue of s.33 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, no one under the age of 18 may be sentenced to death.
by virtue of the ECHR protocol 13, as ratified by the Human Rights Act 1998, nobody may be sentenced to death.
True, as long as that Act remains in force.
They seem to have lost their patience on this one

The child pleaded guilty to manslaughter but showed no remorse at any point which seems to have made the Crown seek a conviction for murder

I think that is why his name and photo has been released
Just saying ... "there are rarely better examples".

Oh, and I hope those who complain that their taxes are funding benefits for immigrants will reflect on the fact that their taxes are also funding this person's stay in prison for the next 60+ years.
Ellipsis...this is a 16 year old boy we are talking about...do you really think that we should be hanging him ?
... or should we be putting him in prison for the rest of his life?
Yes we should. And I for one am happy to contribute a portion of my hard earned.
^^^ What Zacs said.
It wouldn't surprise me if in 20 years time he says he now feels remorse for what he did, so they go 'oh brilliant, well done', and let him out to kill someone else.
Getting older is more guaranteed than wisdom.
nasty piece of work.should never be released IMHO
I don't think it'll be so easy. And besides, 20 years is long enough to sort out the parole board so that they make better decisions. Well, you'd hope so anyway.

The reports so far suggest to me that it's highly unlikely he'll be let out after just 20 years.

We should remember another killer who has been in the news recently, Harry Roberts. Despite murdering three police officers he is to be released from prison. His crime had a motive that we can understand. He hoped to avoid arrest.
In contrast, the motive this teenager convicted today had is buried somewhere in his crazy mind. That's why I think he is ill. I'm surprised the defence didn't run with a plea of diminished responsibility.
