Mikey...I gave this a great deal of thought at the time and while it's probably not something I would have done were I a surgeon I don't think it warrants losing a transplant surgeon...especially a good one.
I have had far too much to do with surgeons over the years and have generally found the ones with humour, often black humour, are the ones I have had the greatest trust in.
There's a hell of a lot hanging on the transplantation of an organ...a bit of light relief can't go amiss.

I recall our first meeting of patients awaiting transplant with the kidney surgeon.
He introduced himself as a plumber who was going to do a good plumbing job....it was really that simple....he said...and that was all he got the chance to say.
A patient stood up and ripped him apart for mocking the patients.....likening them to washing machines!
I thought he was putting us at our ease....but heyho....☺
mikey......I don't blame him one iota for resigning and in a previous thread some time ago, I said that had it have been me, i would have resigned straight away and emigrated......USA or Australia.

A load of nonsense in my opinion and the underlying problem in my opinion was jealousy from other surgeons ( probably those of left wing ideology with no private practice.)

Just my opinion mikey.

Thanks all...what a pity that we have lost a much-needed surgeon, over a moment of madness.
resignation...............good choice .
If his colleagues invite him to a leaving dinner will liver, bacon, and onions be on the menu?
and gall bladder for pudding ?
Craftsmen have been leaving their signatures on their work for centuries. Is this really any different?

I would have thought that if there was any risk of danger in the actions of this surgeon he wouldn't have left his mark.

If I found myself in a situation in need of ememgency surgery and where my medical notes were not available but there was a signature linking me to a past surgeon I think I'd be grateful.
sandy...LOL

Just reminds me........the days before antibiotic treatment of gastric ulcers, partial removal of the stomach (partial gastrectomy) was commonplace.
The stomach was resected by electrical diathermy which gave of a smoke on contact with the stomach.

The smell of that smoke was ...delightful.
And if Sqad ever invites us to a barbeque??????
There seems a fairly simple recipe here to go with pork belly strips. Would it serve?

I'm sorry he has resigned - as others have said good transplant surgeons are not easy to come by, and it is very unlikely he would ever do such a thing again.

Sqad - surgeons "probably those of left wing ideology with no private practice"?
Are you sure any such exist? I've never come across even one ...
slaney.....LOL.....I take your point.....the "lefties " are usually physicians......full time ;-)

Yes we had a couple of lefty full time surgeons, but luckily for the rest of us, they devoted their time to medical politics.......and got their A+ merit awards.

I wonder if Rowan knew him? If so she could tell us what kind of guy he was/is.
jeza

Yes she did and this is what she posted:

Hi all

I do know this guy, he looked after me before he moved back to liver as a consultant. He's warm, kind and funny as well as being like most good surgeons a bit of a handful (we had a fair few clashes when looking for beds for patients in the past) But if I needed a liver surgeon he is still the one I would want and if that meant getting a very personal autograph then I'd not care at all. No he should not have done it... it did show a degree of disrespect to the patient but now he just needs to get on with his job which is saving lives Something he and the rest of the liver team do so brilliantly
Thanks for that sqad. Pity he felt the need to resign.
Yes I'm sorry he felt the need to resign. Many people have done far worse and kept their jobs; politicians come first to mind!
left wing consultants, medical/surgical, not in the last 30 years.
// Part of the allegation was that Mr Bramhall signed his initials more than once.
He told the BBC he had made "a mistake". //

He must have made a typo.

I'm not sorry he felt the need to resign. I'm sorry he felt the need to graffiti his 'tag' into someone's body. Weirdo.
I am sorry he has gone / been driven out

if his results are good - he will get a post somewhere
He wouldn`t have voluntarily resigned. He would have been'asked to leave' (I have seen this so many times) which means that his pension isn`t affected and his CV will not state that he was sacked.
