Can't believe what's happening at Glasgow School of Art. There's been a major fire and the library and museum have been destroyed. Presume many pieces of unique CR Mackintosh art nouveau furniture have been destroyed.

Have any ABers been on a tour of the building?

tragic news
Yes
And it is indeed a tragedy if true.
It looks terrible, Plowter....such a tragedy.
BBC Scotland's take on it

How awful. Fabulous collection hope that the majority can be saved.

I'm off to check the current situation :-(
I am so, so sad to see the extent of the fire.

I share Muriel's tears.....
well i hope that room is ok it is beautiful
That is sad news, so much could be destroyed.
Jon Snow was there for Channel 4 News re. Scottish referendum survey only a couple of weeks back, but the students seemed more intent on computers than books. I was shown around years ago with a group of French and English Art Teachers all of us administrators of a Franco/Britannic art student exchange programme.
I thought the ghost of Mackintosh hung a bit heavy over the place, but it's always sad when important historical artefacts get destroyed.
It's just a building, no one died or was injured

joeluke you have no soul!!
there are buildings and then there are fabulous buildings.
I sometimes wonder if the people responsible for safeguarding national treasures have any qualifications in the subject. I suppose a sprinkler system would have not been 'in period'. A few years ago some iron age settlements were 'tidied up' in Northumberland and a library below river level in london was surprisingly flooded.
Loss of life or serious injury in a building fire is a tragedy

A 'fabulous' building on fire but everyone escapes unhurt is not
Yes it is.
I can't believe that I am going to say this - I tend to agree with joeluke. It's a building and can be rebuilt and nobody was hurt.

I appreciate art and it is always sad when a piece of art is lost. But I can't see me getting upset about the loss of artwork.

This might seem a bit harsh but its how I feel. Now - if the school's best mouser has been injured in the fire I will feel some emotion.

Yes, I think it is a tragedy when a beautiful iconic building is lost. Hopefully the exterior will survive which is something. A beautiful building can move me to tears but keep that to yourselves I don't want everyone to know.
