Remember at the end of last year, when several news sources warned of the hundreds of thousands of Romanians and Bulgarians all champing at the bit to come over to the UK from January 1st?

What happened?

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/may/14/number-romanian-bulgarian-workers-falls-border-controls

From the Office of National Statistics:

"The labour force survey figures show that there were 122,000 Romanians and Bulgarians nationals working in Britain in March this year – a fall from 125,000 in December just before the last seven-year transitional controls were lifted on the new EU members on 1 January."

wild words.

Are you on "every channel crossing", Khandro? Do your own eyes really see the whole country? Yu must have remarkable powers.
This report make interesting reading, sp:

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/116025/horr68-report.pdf

It's a couple of years old, and the data is older than that, but I think it demonstrates the point. A couple of extracts:

"A large and increasing proportion of British citizens emigrating from the UK are those from professional or managerial occupations and this may have implications for the availability of skills in the UK. In 2010 almost one-half (48%) of British emigrants were previously in professional or managerial roles."

"Of the 339,000 people of all nationalities emigrating from the UK in 2010 121,000 (36%) had a previous occupation that was categorised as "professional" or "managerial". This was the largest of the five categories."

Between 1997 and 2010 net migration to the UK totalled 2.2 million. Not too bad - "only" equivalent to two cities the size of Birmingham. However, that is not the whole story. In that period the UK saw more than seven million new arrivals - those that are known about anyway - settle here (the difference between the two figures being people who had left the UK). Yes it's true that a number of those leaving were immigrants who had settled here and then left. But most of them were not; they were people who were born here and who had upped sticks. And that is why I say that “net” migration figures are deliberately misleading and conceal what is in fact a scandalous state of affairs.

Whatever the relative skill sets of those arriving and leaving I'm not too sure that I like the idea of the indigenous population being replaced at quite a rate by foreigners.

"Just an observation, but immigrants like jno, and the children of immigrants like sp, seem to heartily support uncontrolled immigration regardless of the detrimental effect it may have on the country as a whole. That doesn’t seem terribly sensible to me."

That is a very unfair characterisation, and doesn't really summarise my attitude.

Still, I suppose you might get to that conclusion from some posts I've written in the past, but I have a feeling that was simply to wind up someone who was irritating me at the time.

Silly, but I was very probably drunk at the time.

You asked:

"Why do you keep repeating this mantra? Where do you live, - on the Outer Hebrides?"

No, London.

Just repeating what I read in these papers:

Am loving your cross channel ferry evidence.

It's the very definition of empirical, isn't it though?

Thank you for the link...will have a read of it tomorrow. Just home for 'Book Of Mormon' so I've not had much chance to look at this thread this evening.
Isn't it typical of those perfidious Southern Europeans. When they're needed to fuel a political scare they don't show.
jno; //Are you on "every channel crossing", Khandro? Do your own eyes really see the whole country?//
Obviously I am not, but I do travel between the French ports and England quite frequently, and I do move around within the UK when I'm there. You didn't answer my question; when were you last on a channel ferry, and echoing some of the above posts, have you ever been to places like High Wycombe, Bradford or Bolton?
I am not in any way prejudiced nor racist, it's purely a matter of logic. Just as there is a limit to how many people can live practically in one house, there is a limit to how many people can live in one land mass, before Malthusian principles kick in and life becomes intolerable for everyone while
politicians dish out spurious statistics for their own aggrandisement and political advantage. The fact is that apart from mass observation no one really knows at all how many immigrants are in the UK.
The thought that Cameron supports the idea of TURKEY joining the EU disturbs me profoundly, and makes me wonder, not only whether or not he is fit to run the country, but whether he is in fact insane.
blinkered Khandro, not necessarily insane. like most of our politicians.
I know a few Romanians. They are sound people who have always worked since arriving here. My next door neighbours are Polish and they are outside every morning at 5.30am to get picked up for work.
fine however that doesn't stop the fact that mass immigration has had and will continue to have a massive impact on every service, which are already under siege. A relative is a school head and they are taking year on year influxes of children from Eastern Europe, this is not a city school but out in the sticks, He has said its put their school under enormous pressure, not least because most do not speak English, and whether they pick it up quickly is neither here nor there. He has seen the drawbacks to this better than most i would say. Not to mention the housing shortage, and jobs in their area.
My kids attended a Catholic school and I don't think the intake of Polish kids had a detrimental effect on their education.

The Polish next door rent privately.
and i would say that if British families up sticks to live in Spain, France, Germany say for work, the children are not going to be taught the language, nor the parents, they would have to pay in a language school.
nor would you expect to see everything translated into English.
i think this situation has been swept under the carpet, that politicians won't deal with it, as being labelled xenophobic little Englanders, which quite honestly makes me wonder at some
I think they have English speaking schools in Spain.
if they don't speak the language then the school has to start from scratch,
which means resources are being diverted to do so. this is not a new thing, he has been running the school for many years, which by and large didn't have this problem until someone decided that our borders are open to all EU citizens, free to roam, work, settle. Fine for them - but this is putting pressure on everything. And the comparable situation isn't going to happen for British workers, unless its France, Germany, the much larger and better for now economies, standard of living.
this says that all international schools are fee paying, this is in Spain.
here its free, unless they send the children to private schools,

http://www.yourviva.com/content/lifeinsouthernspain/facts/education
Plenty of them here in Sussex, especially in Brighton and Littlehampton.
indeed.
I don't speak their language so they could be from anywhere....
my Head of school relative says they are mostly from Poland, and most don't have a word of English - its not one intake, but many, over any number of years, so they have to be taught the basics from scratch.
as i pointed out and sure that NJ would weigh in, no other country will teach you or your child the language, you have to pay, and that is not the only issue and it isn't only pertinent to the capital, but country wide.
as i said they are a relatively small out in the sticks school, who's funds have to meet the demand made on them.
