As I heard on R2, things only start to happen when the effluent hits the affluent.
But your floods are not the result of diverted channels

You live in wetlands; we dont.

I don't blame you at all, Lilac.....it seemed that what the people of Somerset were having to deal with was of no consequence.....just getting their feet a tad wet.

It's a different story now though isn't it?
Of course the levels are wet lands, that's why they had Dutch engineers over in the 1600's to build a system of drains and sluices that worked perfectly well for hundreds of years till "somebody" not too long ago decided that the system worked that well that it didn't need maintainng and let the drains silt up with the results we're seeing now.As you say they're wet lands and wet lands flood but while the drains were maintained the system kept the flooding to a reasonable and soon drained level.
Do you pay extra taxes to have the drains unsilted there like they do in Holland? If you do then you definitely have a case. If not then well.....

The flooding in windsor is man made, although the moaning coming just because they no longer have a field from some was beyond belief.
Somerset votes for the LibDems so everyone ignores them. Surrey doesn't.
How many people in Somerset have been seriously affected? I heard somewhere 400.

How many thousand would be affected by a serious Thames Valley flooding?

And as the Somerset Levels are at or below sea level it's doubtful any increased efficiency of river drainage would have made any difference with the recent record breaking rainfall there - with nowhere much lower to flow off to, water needs time to settle back into the sea.
Question Author
In answer to your question how many houses have been affected. Keuhl. It was stated in a newspaper it has effected 1072 homes and £150.000 live stock lost at that time the paper was printed. So make it a few more by now.! The flooding is still getting worse and more people are being rescued. Some after 13 days of being in a flooded property.

Here is what other people have had to say

Somerset locals expect some flooding, but they also expect "flood defence" to mean exactly that - locals pay £400K a year but get less than nothing.

Selling all dredging equipment, lowering river banks, not dredging for 20 years, flooding fields for wading birds, filling flood relief reservoirs in summer, building a £18m wildlife saltmarsh, a biased grant system, building mariners next to £10m homes and creating policy of flooding the flood plain on purpose doesn't quite qualify does it ?

The EA knew the problem from the floods in 2012, locals asked for help and the EA promptly did nothing - even though their own modelling said dredging would help.

We pay taxes to provide flooding solutions in extreme conditions - not create guaranteed conditions for flooding.

southeast army helping to try and prevent flood damage in staight away. Southwest how long is it we have been without help!!!!

Just some other peoples views down here.
What annoys me is people pleading for Cameron to show his face, what's the point in him turning up?

As for the 'rescues' they've shown on the news ...getting pulled along in a dingy in ankle deep water!
tambo - well you do now - (live in wetlands)
so get used to it ! [ like you told the Zummersetters they had to ]
.

Zax - - - that is so TRUE ! as soon as the Thameside screamers and moaners get going - the PM comes running....
where as those long suffering farmers in the middle of nowhere - Dawlish isnt it ? can get stuffed - no one can understand what they'er saying anyway.....
Im getting very angry with the news to except I get angry at people who expect the government to"do something" but don't specify what they expect. Perhaps they want the prime minister to do a Sun dance
Question Author
It makes me laugh to see a dingy with people pulling it along in water that is ankle deep! Boy that is deep isnt it.!!
Black cat....do you really think we have to tell the government what to do? Perhaps if Cameron had done a Sun Dance instead of demanding the EA make cuts and had listened to the experts when they were forecasting the results of those cuts we would be in a better position to deal with what is happening now.

And perhaps people have to be rescued through shallow water because it isn't exactly water they would be wading through. I wouldn't want my kids walking through the contents of the sewers.
so sorry gness, what you are saying is you'd like david cameron to turn back time?
Question Author
No I agree with not wanting to walk in it. But surely your children have wellie boots.? The water I was on about was yesterdays in Berkshire. And that was walkable with them on.
However it is absolutely pouring down here again in Somerset and the winds are really strong. Getting stronger as the day goes on we have been told.
Our daughter, son in law and grandchildren were in Burrowbridge all day sunday helping out filling sand bags..even the children formed a human chain and was helping out with supplies. She has been out all week while the children are at school. And even today she has gone but I have just heard from her she is having to come back because it was getting too dangerous.
Without help from surrounding areas these poor people have been left on there own for 7 weeks.! Even on sunday my daughter said an army truck came along... looked at everyone filling sandbags..and just drove off.!!
I couldnt care less if Cameron or the Queen turns up to see it .!! I would just like them to send some help.!!
but they have sent the army haven't they? You just said that
I bet he wishes he could turn back time!
Question Author
Yes last weekend the army was sent in. At first two men came to look at it.! Then they said they where "on standby". Then a few turned up. But where my family was helping on sunday this truck just stopped and went on. Everyone there where frantic to fill sand bags so they could be taken and put down. Another two soldiers would have been useful.
