My daughter is an animal nut, she has 3 dogs and until today had 2 cats. Yesterday milly , a beautiful black and white cat had to be put down as she had liver failure and today Fags a gorgeous black cat also had to be put down due to the same thing. They were both nearly 18 years old. Awful to lose one pet but to lose 2 in 2 days is beyond belief. She is absolutely distraught. I know how she feels though, when I lost my cat I was so upset it made me feel ill. It took ages to get over it.
Why do we put ourselves through this heartbreak?

Oh dear, how sad...time helps but the pain takes a while to subside ...
Bless her. It is heartbreaking losing an animal and two in one go, is so unlucky. I don't really have anything helpful, but i feel for her. Give her a big hug xx
Well she did very well to keep them until they were nearly 18 Caran bless her. We do it because we love animals. And she'll probably do it again. X
Wow, two cats in two day's, dunno why we do it but we do. I can understand your daughter being distraught she's had them both for 18 years.
Your poor daughter, she must be heartbroken. We put ourselves through it because we get a lot of pleasure from our little friends even though we know how much it will hurt when we lose them. RIP little cats and hugs to your daughter.
Rip Milly & Fags, that's very sad. It took me over a year to get over the loss of Puss & Boots both elderly cats, it will just take time and plenty of tears for your daughter. I said I would never put myself through that again, but guess what, I now have two rescue cats, so here we go again. Hope that your daughter can have comfort in knowing that she gave her cats the best life, and also a little comfort that they are both together at Rainbow Bridge.

Thank you all for your very kind and caring replies. I just know she will have to get another two. Just hope she doesn't go down the kitten route. There are lots of cats wanting re homing in Catteries.
My two rescue cats, been with us now about 18 months.

When my Barney died in 1988 I said never again. I loved that cat to bits. Then I got Bobbin who walked in one day and never left. I love cats but not a day goes by when I don't remember Barney, Bobbin was a mans cat, sadly he is no longer with us. So I am still saying never again.
Beautiful cats Puss, though I think all cats are beautiful. One eye, one ear, no tail it makes no difference to me.
Poor lassie. Bad enough to lose one of your pets but two? Hardly bears thinking about. She should take a little comfort in that the two of them are together at the Rainbow Bridge waiting. In time she will probably find another kitty who will steal her heart - they have a way of doing that. I lost one of ours a couple of years ago, I still miss him, he too was 18, I vowed then that I'd never have another, but cut to a few months ago when a tiny scrap of black and white fur snuggled into me at a Cat Foster Mum's place and I was ambushed! He'd had a pretty bad start but he's doing well and I'm certain that when she is ready she will find herself ambushed too.
Meantime, she needs to be able to cry and mourn them even. Doesn't matter that as some people will say "they are only animals" they are not to us, they are part of our families and we feel their loss just the same.

When she phoned today she could hardly speak, doesn't help she has flu and a chest infection. Fags was always my boy, he loved his cuddles, I loved Milly too. I would love another but OH isn't keen.
Terribly sad Caran.
Cat people are a rare breed, we say never again but in the end our homes are empty without one, my daughter said this some time ago and now she has three of the blighters.
If Caspar went....tomorrow,next week...next year...annoying pain in the bum that he is...I know I'd miss him dreadfully, and would want another. They get under your skin...and never let go.
At least your daughter knows she gave a good life to two moggies...and a very long one.
Caspar is at this moment resting his head on the dogs head....he loves to cuddle her.

Aw bless pastafreak.
When I had to have James put to sleep I toyed with the idea of not having another pet as it hurt so much to lose him. But after a while it became clear I couldn't not have another cat, life was empty without feline company so I went to the kitten cottage to adopt a bundle of fur and spikes and got a beautiful Bengal. And what a pity I didn't have the camera handy when our boxer dog was trotting round with a Bengal kitten dangling off her ear by his claws.
