It would seem that many Republicans voted against this new Bill. Is it any wonder that the Republican Party is such disarray, when they side with those that would see such discrimination to continue ?

They have also lost important Mayoral elections in NY and Virginia ::

Where does the party go now ? It appears to be drifting so far to the right, that they are making themselves unelectable in 2014. And that is without Sarah Palins help !

The bedrock of the Republican vote has always been the fundamentalist Christians, of which there are a seriou number in the U.S.

The Republican Party has always moved in a way that will ensure that this massive block vote remains in their corner, and rejection of any legislation seen to be in support of gay rights ensures that their support is continuous.
mikey4444...I'm trying to understand what's being proposed (must have my thick head on today).

This now means that employers can legally sack someone for being gay? Am I reading that right?
No - hang on...got it!

This is actually good news...it's just the Republicans who oppose it, right?
Blimey - I know the conservatives (small 'c') in the UK think that we're all too 'PC', but when you look at other countries and how far behind they are...kinda makes you shudder.
Not sure which century they're living in!

Got it in three SP !

I am using this as an example of how unelectable the Republican Party is making itself. It would be easy for European observers to conclude that being Republican now means that you favour guns, weirdo religions and now, discrimination. They seem not to realise that they are in a hole and can't see over the top any more.

Andy...you are right of course, but they are slipping so badly in popular support that they face the real possibility of being out of power for a generation. What price their backward views then, if nobody is listening any more ?
America is a big place with lots of people with wide ranging views.

Just becasue they loose a Mayoral election (which is usually more personality based anyway) in right-on New York does not mean they wont appeal to say people in Alabama.

In fact I would strongly suggest you dont go mouthing off in Alabama, I dont think they like lefties either let alone have any time for Gays.

How lucky I am then ymb that I have no intention of visiting Alabama again..once was enough. I was last there in the late 1970's and it was easily the most uncomfortable place that I have ever been. Hell will freeze over before I visit again.

But US elections are not won or lost in in backward places like Alabama. The Republicans are losing support all over the shop, and look increasingly unlikely to win the White House in two years time. As America usually elects the same President for two consecutive terms, they could be out of power for the next 10 years.

ymb...I forgot to ask you. You use this phrase "right on" continually, but I have never really understood what it means...are you able to enlighten me ?
