I wanted to record the BBC1 film tonight The Girl in the Park. It was about a woman whose daughter went missing and years later she meets someone who she thinks is her daughter. I now find that it has been withdrawn. I rang the BBC to ask why but the person who took my call didn't know.
I was asked if I wanted to make a complaint. I said IF the reason was because of the McCann publicity i did want to complain. Dramas and films every day deal with subjects such as rape and murder which must be upsetting to someone. And I hardly think Kate and Gerry would watch a film like that if they knew what it was about.
I resent the BBC being so sensitive on my behalf (if indeed that was the reason for replacing the film with something else.)

Probably not good timing, rosie, given the huge wave of public response to the revival of the McCann case.
I had my hard drive set for this too....poo and double poo....and poo again !
Is it the Sigourney Weaver film? If it is then it's very good.

I do know what you mean though, there's always someone out there suffering a similar scenario somewhere.
Probably not being oversensitive on your behalf but warding of the undoubted 1000s of complaints they'd get for showing the film while the Madeleine story is in all the news at the moment. They can't win. I'm sure it will be shown at a later date.
I imagine that is the reason. While i think you're right, that a lot of broadcasts would upset someone, this has just been brought back into people's minds in the News. So i think many would see it as insensitive.
I'm sure if you tell them how much you want to see it, they will see sense.
I would like to see this film too, I think I will just buy it now that you have brought it to my attention. thank you
if like me you are interested in buying, I have looked up 2 so far

Not quite sure what you are upset about Rosie ? I found the crimewatch program fascinating. The BBC have a good record of helping to solve these crimes...lets hope this is another occasion when they are successful.
The fact that a film with a child abduction theme has been pulled by the beeb tonight mikey !

I thought the Crimewatch programme was excellent , well researched, sensitively presented and what seems valuable new leads. I only wish that that it had been shown in Portugal as a lot of ex pats live there and might be able to help. But they are upset with us because of the bad press they got. Mikey I'm not upset - I just don't like being "Nannied" by the BBC, State or anyone else. Good leads Katburd - thanks.
I only wish they could have got all this information six years ago - I really don't think that even if they find these people they have named, there is much change of finding Madeleine now. She could be anywhere.

I agree Boxie - I fear she is either with a wealthy family somewhere in the world who look upon a little blond girl as a status symbol - or the other much darker scenario that we all know about.
As so often, the trail has gone cold. Chances are the little girl was dead within hours. The idea that a burglar, surprised by a toddler, would carry her off, thereby increasing the chances of his being noticed, is peculiarly fanciful. Can't blame the BBC for being sensitive, though.
well yeah
remember they still went through with the first episode of Dr Who when Pres Kennedy was killed
Yes, PP. I remember it as Harry Worth's comedy show being interrupted to tell us and then resumed ! It wasn't wildly funny at best, being rather gentle humour, but that was peculiarly unfortunate. Elsewhere, they'd have left a blank screen and played what the BBC calls 'martial music', but that wouldn't have been British, what ?
And not as good as the Cuban missile crisis. The headmaster addressed us boys at morning assembly. As I remember it, his address went "You boys may have heard that the civilised world may come to an end in twenty minutes. Do not worry about such matters. Some people in this fine country can run a mile in four minutes, so keep a stiff upper lip, be British (and that includes you, Cohen, and you, Jumbwallah minor)and remember that the second XV are playing Oakham on Saturday and needs your support. Message over, and Hurrah for the School",
Peter pedant - if memory serves, it was actually the second episode of Doctor Who, and it was not transmitted at the scheduled time, it was delayed by twenty-four hours.
The McCanns have been generating publicity steadily since the disappearance of madeleine. I don't see how they would suddenly become sensitive, there has been little evidence of sensitivity up 'til now, just a continuing attempt to focus attention in a particular direction.
I was mistified at the time, and remain mistified now - as to why this abduction, out of the hundreds that occur every year, has obtained and maintained such a high media coverage.

I do not for a moment wish to negate the terrible ordeal suffered by this family, but it is equally suffered by other families, who seem to endure their loss in silence and annonymity.
