The Commons Have Voted Against War With Syria

David Cameron's plans for war have been rejected in a House of Commons vote tonight. The Hovernment have lost control of its own foreign policy and Dave has been dealt a humiliating defeat, which will embarrass him abroad.

Common sense prevails?

Personally I too think we should stay out of it but I just get a little sad at how gromit and co seem to revel in The PM trying to do something and not getting anywhere. I just wonder how they would react if Millipede was the PM doing the same, as in a certain Mr Blair some years ago.

There was not a vote on a war, but a vote on whether we should assist in any action taken by the west, mostly the US. Britain has not decalred war since 1942, still add a bit of drama eh!

Just a comment on the Churchill confidence vote of 1942 (the relevance of which mind you I'm at a loss to see). Motion carried 464 to 1
Does anyone know who the "one" was ?!

I was against the Iraq war and the only 'demo' I have ever been on was the one against us going there. Just as much as I am please that Cameron has been defeated, I was equally dissappointed that Tony Liar succeeded in dragging us into Iraq.

Sorry Gromit this vote will not embarrass the PM abroad, they all know he has a minority backed by a load of liberal Jellies when it suits them and an opposition who wouldn't flinch from using the plight of Syria to help inflict a defeat. In fact this would have done him a lot of favours with the world community, even the French have been talking about doing something! Obama will be well aware of the company Cameron is forced to entertain.

good news, in my opinion. Too many interventions, well-meaning or not, have failed miserably.

MPs voted against it even if weapons inspectors' evidence supported the case for intervention. Cameron has acknowledged that the British people just don't want to go there. At least he hasn't simply ignored their wishes as Blair did.

When all's said and done there is no real stomach for this from the British government either.
If there was there would never have been a vote.
The time for meaningful action was years ago, but we were trying to go down the UN route which is doomed. It was interesting to hear the excellent General Lord Dannatt still banging on about the UN security council to adopt a unanimous position. There was no chance of that in 2011 and there's no chance of it now.
