Charles Saatchi has got his wife, Nigella Lawson by the throat in a restaurant in London. Criticism is being levelled at onlookers who didn't intervene. Would you intervene between man and wife in this situation?

I've no idea how I'd react. I'm very surprised though that if it happened as in that link that the restaurant staff didn't intervene - which makes me think the 'report' has been cleverly edited.

It's hard to imagine how someone who used to be married to the wonderful and sadly missed John Diamond could move on to someone like that.

I think John Diamond died of cancer of the throat. Looks like Nigella has contracted her own variety ...

Yes ichkeria, I remember John Diamond, what a shame he died so young of throat cancer. It was chronicled by him in the papers at the time and I remember following his story. A different man entirely to CS.

If he is descending into dementia or whatever it's very sad for both of them, especially Nigella. But he still can't be allowed to assault his wife like that wherever it happens.

Which is why I'd intervene in the manner I suggested, not steam-roller in rolling my sleeves up. A lot can be gleaned from a polite enquiry and the situation made far clearer.

Yes ladybirder I also followed the story of John Diamond's cancer. Before he contracted it his weekly Times column was one of the first to invite people to hook up and chat via the internet.

I hadn't realised Charles Saatchi was ill, although I'm not sure that changes my opinion.
Would I have intervened? Not sure. Would depend on a lot of factors. It's easy for me to sit here and say "Yes", but ...

We don't know he's ill ichkeria, we're just surmising he might be, to excuse his behaviour.

He might be a nasty bully.
