Can anybody tell me how to gauge my oil - I do know there is plenty (I hope) in the tank. There is a little glass/plastic long gauge outside the big tank but it seems full of condensation and you can no longer see where you are at.

Somebody told me about one of these plug in things but is there any thing else I could use. Another neighbour put a long stick in - for the want of a word can you buy a "dip stick" from a plumbers place. Thanks for any answers

you can get get several different types of gauges from the expensive plug ones to a simple float on the end of a piece of string - the dipstick that we have was made by hubby.

Look on ebay.

Buy a broom handle. It won't provide pin point accuracy but should tell you when its nearly empty..

You wont believe it went on to google and put it in plugs in for oil - and it gave me information for gauging "ears" - there ya go

Thanks Sandy Roe - that is what my neighbour did - might give that a go and then keep it clean and put in the shed. Cheapest all round - Fried - will have a look on ebay anyway. Thanks
Insert clean broom handle or clean flat stick. Mark stick at level where it enters tank. Keep doing this until oil visible on handle/stick re marking insertion level each time.
Hold stick on outside of tank with final level mark level with top of tank. You will see by oil stain on stick how low from bottom of tank oil is.
By simple maths you should get idea of how many gallons there are left.

malagabob - not great at maths - I was actually going to insert stick and see at bottom of stick where the oil mark is - now you are saying at top of stick - sorry don't understand - but dont worry maybe a proper dipstick thanks for your reply
My father had this problem. We discovered that the top end of the gauge tube was open, so we dropped a small bright orange plastic pellet down it. It floated and made the level much easier to read.
Good idea by atalanta. Was going to suggest this By the way 1 cubic mtr holds roughly 1000 ltrs.
