/// Changes in attitudes within football were highlighted following a recent study by the University of Staffordshire which suggested the majority of fans would welcome players coming out as gay. ///

/// The study, as reported by The Independent, found that 40 per cent of fans blamed clubs and agents for keeping gay footballers under wraps. ///

In my opinion, football has enough problems with racism, without adding homophobia to them.

What do you think, would it be a good thing for gay footballers to 'come out'?

/// But clearly, when posts appear that are dishonest, misleading, foolish or thinly disguised vehicles for projecting some prejudice or other then ABers will want to point out the shortcomings and stupidity in those posts ///

I take exception to you your suggestion that my post is dishonest, misleading, foolish etc, etc.

Where have any of these been such?

I only asked a news question on the subject of gay footballers, that was even reported on back in Feb 2010 and in the Guardian for those of a more delicate taste for news.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/feb/10/can-gay-footballers-come-out

I asked the question, "Is It Really Important For Gay Footballers To Come Out Of The Closet"?

Please answer this giving the reasons if it is really important.

I then gave a personal opinion. "In my opinion, football has enough problems with racism, without adding homophobia to them".

Straight forward enough opinion, taking into account the racist problems caused in Soccer.

Please state whether or not you agree with my opinion and if you are against it, please outline why it would not cause additional problems?

I finally asked "What do you think, would it be a good thing for gay footballers to come out"?

Once again asking for others to answer that particular question, without the need to twist my question into something that could cause others to hit back.

Now have I been dishonest, misleading, foolish or have thinly disguised vehicles for projecting some prejudice?

are there particular known individuals at risk of 'outing'?

clearly that is a gross disrespect for people's rights to make their own decisions but it is bizarre that in 2013 there are still situations in which people who are otherwise accomplished, successful and self confident should feel it necessary to conceal such a fundamental aspect of themselves

Wow who would have thought just a simple question would get everyone tied up in very twisted and sensitive raw nerves?

Right let me try to answer some more of your questions, but the fact is I am getting rather bored of the whole thing and now couldn't care less whether or not they 'come out'.

/// Are you saying that there isn't homophobia in football at the moment, ///

Not that I am aware of, since gay footballers seem to be reluctant to announce the fact of their sexuality.

/// and the presence of a gay footballer would prompt homophobia...///

It more than likely would, seeing that certain members of a football crowd will focus their energies on those they wish to.

/// or are you saying there's already a level of homophobia, so gay footballers are best keeping it quiet? ///

There certainly is amongst some, so why would football crowds be any different, knowing their record on racism?

/// Perhaps an analogy would be, "In my opinion, football has enough problems with racism, without adding anti-semiism to them. So Jewish players should keep their faith a secret". ///

Well maybe to a lesser effect, since anti-Semitism, seems to be in third place to Racism and Homophobia, I mean can you imagine any Jewish chants off hand?

/// It's not a level playing field at the moment, because Peter Crouch can be pictured on holiday holding hands with his wife, but ***** ** ***** can't be seen with his boyfriend. ///

Who's stopping ***** ** ***** from being seen with his boyfriend?

Perhaps ***** ** ***** himself is stopping pictures being taken or published of him, holding hands with his boyfriend?

//I take exception to you your suggestion that my post is dishonest, misleading, foolish etc, etc./

Where have any of these been such?//

The most recent foolishness was your muddled and incorrect accusation that Gromit labelled all Sun/Mail readers as 'boneheaded'

// "In my opinion, football has enough problems with racism, without adding homophobia to them".
Straight forward enough opinion, taking into account the racist problems caused in Soccer.//

Interesting parallel aog... so homophobia can be improved by gays staying in the closet (not by standing up to the homophobia)

Logically then, your argument would be that racism in football can be improved by getting all the blacks out of the game?
Interesting way of dealing with racism - not without precedent I suppose

/ thinly disguised vehicles for projecting some prejudice? //

Well of your most recent 20 questions, 1 was a xmas greeting and 12 were related to ethnic minorities, immigrants or gays

Fair enough perhaps, but what seem like open objective questions such as ;

/Have The Parents Of This Girl Got A Case?/

are revealed pretty quickly as anything but, more a way of slipping in a particular (and consistent) agenda;

Why did this Muslim couple enrol their child in a Greek Orthodox school in the first place?
Why the need to take their case to the High Court?
who will be picking up the legal bill?
etc etc
/I mean can you imagine any Jewish chants off hand?/

Yes
Spurs have been victims of 'Yid' chanting for many years

/// But do you thing they should deliberately hide the fact that they are gay? ///

That is entirely up to them themselves, and my opinion is irrelevant.

But enough to say that since they are reluctant to come out, they themselves want to hide the fact, for some reason.
What is stopping ***** ** ***** from being photographed with his boyfriend?

I couldn't say for sure, but I assume that fear would be a great motivator.

As you have already pointed out...he would be facing homophobia from the crowds.

Do you think that people really want to sneak around, living in fear of being outed?
"Well maybe to a lesser effect, since anti-Semitism, seems to be in third place to Racism and Homophobia, I mean can you imagine any Jewish chants off hand? "

yid was an insult used toward the spurs supporters until they adopted it and made it their own

//I mean can you imagine any Jewish chants off hand?//

Seems like football is yet another topic aog doesn't know much about

a recent game with West Ham

/Targeting the home team's famous Jewish connections, the away fans made hissing sounds early in the first half, in relation to the concentration camps during the Second World War. Chants of 'Adolf Hitler's coming for you' were also sung./

/// However, I believe that it is important to soccer (not the game itself, but the world of soccer) that gay players should feel that they CAN come out if they wanted to. ///

And who is stopping them, after all Justin Fashanu came out in 1990 I believe?

Whatever the reason they refuse to openly admit that they are gay, only those who are can answer.

If the reason for their reluctance is the fright of having homophobic chants focused on them, then hardly any black player would walk onto a football field in case they had racist chants aimed at them.
Haven't read all of the posts, but is it important to state your sexuality preference when doing a job?
No.
In my opinion this is just gay activists, looking for a "working class" figure head, maybe to changes some very bigoted opinion, but who cares, seriously. If we have a striker who scores 20 goals a season, I don't care who hes sleeping wit.

This fixation with peoples sexuality, I find increasingly strange. I love Elton John his nusic and his honesty in public life. I put on Madman across the Water I don't care who hes sleeping with.

Claire Balding, arguably, the best presenter on the telly, I don't care that shes tying the knot with a woman, I care that the horse she's tipping can get an extra furlong in heavy going.

It go's on and on, the whole controversy about "GAY" seem to do with the media and the chattering classes, who have this lascivious need to dable in the private lives of people.

People are people and we are all different so in answer, no its not, and anyone who's perceptions of a person depend on that persons sexuality, need their head testing.

AOG

People don't 'admit' they're gay.

They confirm it. Admission implies guilt.

Of course at some point it will have to happen, because there will be a footballer who wants to have a civil partnership. And that will be impossible to keep secret.
Davethedog

And if everyone were like you, there would be no problem.

Unfortunately, whilst gay men are killed for being gay and whilst gay teenagers commit suicide because they cannot handle being gay and whilst families reject their gay kids, the problem will still stand.

what do you expect?
they were probably 'flaunting it'

Oh dear and the personal accusations go on and on, it's like being back in Junior School, wait a minute though I don't think the schools have gone back after their Christmas break, perhaps that is the reason, 'idle hands' and all that.

It is also news to me that one can be accused of not knowing much about the game of football, simply because one is not aware of the chants that some West Ham fans made against Tottenham's 'YID ARMY'.

Amazing absolutely amazing.
SP1814 I know your right, but I have a great problem understanding these prejudices, not in a naive way, but in human way. What is the problem, it all appears to stem from a superstitious belief in a mythical deity or subconcious repression.

How can you judge a person by a lifestyle or the colour of their skin or ethnic background? It isn't logical.

If I said to you, I hate everyone who drives a Red car because their horrible, nasty, theiving people and I kept to this, people would suggest quite rightly that I seek psychiatric help.

However saying that you hate all people of a certain colour, opens up debate and people who say it are allowed to walk around.

Well at least it lets the other players in the team know about his sexuality. There's too much cuddling and kissing in the game so we may see more handshakes in future otherwise players could read something into it.
