I found this so upsetting.

I'm don't want to get into a debate about who is to blame for this. The sad fact is that a new mum has lost her baby in such a horrific manner.

My heart goes out to the whole family.

*I don't*
i feel sick reading this news ,dreadful!
It's a very sad accident but a reminder to all that you should trust no dog with children regardless of breed. Same goes for other animals such as cats.
very very sad..and probably avoidable....

I think the problem is that you never think that your placid family pet could harm anyone.

It's always something that happens to other people.

Heartbreaking.

Regret to say I've never come across a placid Jack Russell. On a broader note, when my sone was a new born we made sure that even our small cat was kept away.

I meant in general, McM, not just this case.

We were very careful introducing our spaniel to both the children as newborns. She is a soft lump, but I still keep an eye on them all when they're together.
Goodness that is heartbreaking for them.
millions upon millions of children grow up everyday with animals this is one of those one off tragic episodes.
It is terrible, heartbreaking and very sad.
So very sad. And so easy to be wise after the event and pass judgement. RIP, little one.

My feelings exactly, Kiki.

Easy to say that they should have been more careful with the baby and the dog, but I think they are probably punishing themselves enough.
Very sad for all concerned.
Tragic, but i agree with McMouse and youngmafbog...........a new "being" in the territory of an animal is always a recipe for "challenge" and the outcome of a contest between a young human and a carnivore is always predictable.
