Is anyone else doing the shoebox appeal this year? I'm making one for a teenage girl but i'm kind of stuck on what else I can put in. I have all the basics but I wanted something a wee bit different...

Any ideas? :-)

I am doing some for the armed forces serving in Afghanistan.
I'd like to do one but not sure who's collecting them locally - never done it before, i'll go and google it now.

What do you have in yours so far Erin? and where does the teenage girl live?
we do this at work every year.

erin-x the important thing is that the box contains all the basics that are not the norm where the boxes are going to. A wee bit different to them may mean the world but mean nothing to us. Something simple, even a tiny little doll if it's for a girl. You won't have much room remember.

This links shows what countries the boxes get sent to... http://www.blythswood.org/shoebox/

I have the essentials... Soap, toothpaste/brush, scarf, gloves... And some of the other bits and bobs... Shampoo, deodorant, emery boards, lip balm, few bits of make up, hair bands, wet wipes, sanitary towels... I just thought another little thing would be nice. The equivalent of a doll for a child, if you know what I mean. More of a gift...
Suggestions

Picture, soft toy, hat, necklace, felt heart, purse, finger puppet, small ornament, magnetic ladybird, picture frame, pretty little box to keep things in.

Maybe a few bits from a craft stall or such like.

Here's an advert for the cause... We always do one but we usually make one for a child.

Books? A little cross-stitch kit?

Some good ideas Maidup, thanks :-)

Might get a necklace or something to pop in...

I did think about a book, Voddy, but wasn't sure about them reading English... Makes it hard.
Ah I didn't think of that. What about a wee sketch pad and a wee set of paints or crayons?
Question Author
I like the sketchbook idea... If they're anything like I was at that age they would like it :-)
How about as many ABers as possible try to do this?
It doesn't cost much (£5 ish) but will mean so much more.

Google "Operation Christmas child"
http://www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk/

done it for you, no excuses!
That's the one I do MASS x
My daughter's church in Aberdeen do this every year. Last year they filled over 100 boxes. My friends and I collect bits and pieces throughout the year and take them to Aberdeen a week before the "filling" day. They are always on the lookout for things for men as most donations are for children/women.
I'll do one.
Same here Maggie - my church does it too, I'm the organiser and we have been doing the Operation Christmas Child boxes for many years. I am putting mine together later this week, a wonderful thing to think about their little faces when opening all the gifts, makes me want to cry.............

Just a thought Maggie, you mentioned your church in Aberdeen, is it by any chance Deeside Christian Fellowship? Our current pastor came from that church where he was the Youth Pastor.
I know someone who attends Deeside Christian Fellowship but my daughter is a member of Trinity Church.
He has been with us 5 years now .............
Firstly, sorry to hi jack your thread erin but it was topical and the thought came to me.

I've done 3 boxes this year.
I'm sure a lot of people on here do contribute to the shoebox appeal but more can only mean more.

Once again

Good idea Mass... It's such a simple thing to do and it means the world to them.

I had thought about making one for a teenage boy. Don't actually know what made me go for the girl. I think young children and adults get the most. Teenagers are a bit harder.
