Does he imagine being a famous actor endows him with some inherent knowledge of foriegn affairs? Most Americans couldn't even find the islands on the map, what makes this particular one special?

alba, Argentina would ask when the Falklands ever belonged to Britain. Spain (followed by Argentina when it became independent) and Britain have both claimed them for centuries; they nearly went to war at one stage, rowed back, but never settled the claim. It might make sense to do so, but both sides are intransigent.
I do find it ironic that Argentina presses it's claim at the UN in terms of decolonisation.

Given the way that native south Americans have fared - they now represent less than 2% of the population in Argentina I think that's a touch cheeky!

It's all just bluster though - in the final analysis the UN is deeply wedded to the rights of self-determination of people throughout the world they'll never recogise any government's claim over such a dominant population as is in place in the Falklands.

The last time they did that was Israel and it went sooo well!
The Argentine claim is very tenous. There are many other countries with better claims including the Dutch and France.

Khandro

The USA after initially trying unsuccessfully to mediate an end to the conflict, then stated that they would prohibit arms sales to Argentina and provide material support for British operations, not in on the ground man power, but in materials, which is strange when Israel supported the Argies.

Cannot see why the USAF would refuel our aircraft, we could fly from Ascension Island and the Harrier GR.3s and Sea Harrier jump jets could take off and land from HMS Invincible and HMS Hermes

/// A Vulcan bomber from Ascension flew on an 8,000-nautical-mile (15,000 km; 9,200 mi) round trip dropping conventional bombs across the runway at Stanley and back to Ascension. The mission required repeated refuelling, and required several Victor tanker aircraft operating in concert, including tanker to tanker refuelling. The overall effect of the raids on the war is difficult to determine, and the raids consumed precious tanker resources from Ascension.///
Why have we spent blood and gold to defend the Falklands yet didn't do the same to protect Hong Kong?
Could someone please ask the Falkland Islanders which nationality they would like to 'rule' over them? They live there.
We only leased Hong Kong sandy then had to give it back.
They have alba, and they wish to remain under Britain.

Have we got any

In December 2010 the RAF's Harrier GR9s made their last operational flights. ... Luff announced the sale of the final 72 Harrier Aircraft Frames to the US Marine Corps.
Prudie, that is a different argument altogether :)
I suppose it is as the saying goes, "there is no such thing as bad publicity" especially in la la land.

^^
Old Git was referring to 1982 not present day
Zeuhl I am pointing out that we do not have any of these aircraft if it kicks off again down there. The nice French people may loan us one of their aircraft carriers.
^^

Your post thus

Have we got any >>

implied that Old Git's reference to Harriers was erroneous
Anyway

we now have a proper airbase down there with a runway and some Typhoons.

As the argies are still equipped with the old crates they had in 82 i don't think we'll have too many issues there.
