Should this case have gone this far in the first place?

how is it a victory for common sense ? all they said was that they couldn't prove that the woman charged put it there in the first place ?

it would suggest that if there was such evidence in place, the trial would have carried on.

Obviously just too hard to underwrite a prosecution as to any evidence. Placed there with no mal-intent, then it was a ridiculous case. Placed there to upset the neighbours, then it is overt racism and should be prosecuted.
I'm confused, because if I remember the original story correctly she admitted putting it there but denied any malicious intent.

How much evidence do they need anyway? It is her house after all, so the list of suspects can't be too big - maybe they think someone's going round breaking into peoples houses and putting gollies in the window.
"you only think it is a victory as it looks like a white person got one over on a black person. "

that shows your racist train of thought

it shouldn't have got this far because if a neighbour asked for it to not be shown in the window as she found it offensive, it should have been taken down out of decency. Bloody idiots insisting on fighting for their right to free speech instead of just having a bit of decency!
Oh and please stop equating common sense to right wing views, it's disrespectful towards nice people with common sense!

"if a neighbour asked for it to not be shown in the window as she found it offensive, it should have been taken down out of decency."

you cannot be serious, surely ?.....
because she could be sent to prison ?
why not? Should we not consider the feelings of other people? Is having a golly up in your window so important that you'd happily offend a neighbour by keeping it there?
The only common sense outcome would have been to take it down to avoid the fuss!
Common sense.

I just bet that Mrs Mason and Mrs O'Donnell wished that they had never started this in the first place and if given the chance would forget the whole thing without either losing face.

Haven't you EVER done or said something that in retrospect you would have preferred not to have done or said?

I know I have.
What a petty carry on. It's a bit much to ask people to stop putting what they want to have in their own window, and how to prove it was deliberate or not! A waste of money.
so you'd be ok if i lived next door to you and had these at my window then ?

I think people should get a life, its not the end of the world that a doll is put in the window for goodness sake there are more important things to worry about in the world.Grow up.

you've been shopping at clicheworld again aint ya!
Ankou if you lived next door to me and put those images in your window, I would not be bothered one jot !
I don't think the offended people ever asked for it to be taken down. They just went straight to the authorities, and of course whenever the R word is mentioned, the police are on to it like sh1t off a shovel, waving arrest warrants.

As I said at the time the offenders didn't think their hate campaign through properly. They should have just hired a gang of youths to harrass their neighbours by hanging around outside shouting abuse at them and damaging their property. That kind of stuff goes on all the time with little interest shown by the police.
yeah ludwig.. if the actual story isn't radical enough, why not just completely make up a new one and moan about that!
if someone stuck a an inflatable doll with a big fake todge in their window, would you ask them to take it down?
