Yes a ridiculous individual it would seem.

We had to abide by the rules at school .No walking around sans hat .Sixty denier stockings ,skirts so many inches from the ground ( and they got measured ) .No jewellry .Load of twaddle .But of course you had to do it .
Times have changed thank goodness .

We may have looked nice getting off the coach for hockey ( and I played county level hockey ) but did it make me a better person ..swanning about looking like Angela Brazil ..No.
Did that uniform make any difference ..No .I played to win for my school not for their uniform .
How is a haircut so important to somebodys academic capability ?
As long as the boy goes to school ,does his work, behaves himself and does well as an individual fair play to him .
If we didn't have non conformists the world would be a very grey dull place .
Agree with you, prudie, entirely.
My son was head boy at a comprehensive in the mid 80's. During that time he had a mohican for a while and all that was said to him was "tone it down a bit" and he did. (in other words he didn't spike it up at school) - Job done.
He got exceptional grades and went on to be a valuable member of society.
My son had LFC shaved into the back of his head. It was the begining of the summer holidays. When they returned to school in Sep you could, very vaguely, still see it, I was asked to get his hair cut. That was in primary school..

I got his hair cut...as asked.
Good for you ummmm.
Ditto for ummmm, it's nice to hear of parents agreeing with the schools for once instead of always trying to go against them!
"He looks like a potential thug and his parents look as common as muck"
Who are you to judge ?
He's a A grade student according to the article .
I get fed up with people being judged on their appearance whether it be a child or an adult .
Ya mean like the scruffy, scroty looking couple and their thuggish looking son ya mean NAWAIW? ;-)
no, he is an idiot, as well as the parent
haha, probably in Shaney's bad books now after my last post :P
I do BOO ...
Reading all these answers, I think I've changed my mind.

I think children SHOULD be allowed to express their individuality.

They shouldn't be forced to comply with some regulation haircut.

They shouldn't be forced to do school work after they go home.

They shouldn't have to do PE if they dislike the cold.

They should be made to show subservience by calling teachers "Sir" or "Miss".

We should encourage a bit more self expression.

Or, what's the other word for it? Anarchy?

"I am an antichrist, I am an anarchist ... I, wanna beeeee, anaaarchyyyyy"

Sorry ... just expressing some "individuality"

=0)
people make judgements on appearances shaney, its a fact of life. having his hair in that style will just mean that he has to work harder to prove he isnt an idiot/yob, which is probably much harder when he has to go for job interviews.
Uniform and intolerance of individuality is just one of the plethora of reasons we home educated all our kids, or do you all want obedient little sheep wandering around bleating after their masters, because that is really NOT a good thing.
As I said shaney "just making the point that people do make judgements on appearance" it's a fact of life, right or wrong. If he's a grade A student (whatever that means at 11) then his parent's priority should be to encourage the maintenenace of that standard and not to defy school rules and get their their son in the press over a haircut.
"obedient little sheep wandering around bleating after their masters"

Isn't that thing called "work"? And sadly in the work place we all have to conform.
cazzz is right.

People do make snap judgments, based on first impressions.

They shouldn't. But they do. Always have. Always will.

The boy's parents are not going to change that.

They can try to give him the best head start, by making him look like a "smart young man".

Or they can make it so that he always has to work a bit harder than the other kids.

Their shout, really.

Personally, I think they might have made a bad call.
@JJ: With the exception of the comment about anarchy, I think I'd probably agree with just about all of what you've said (maybe not about the PE comment - but there's really no reason to force kids to go outside in the cold. Especially when the teachers who do so are almost invariably wearing nice warm fleeces etc.)

But with that possible exception, I don't see why we should be doing any of the things you've listed unless there's a good reason to be doing them.
In fact they are jeopardising his education by refusing to give him a sensible hairstyle, his education is more important that the parents idea of fashion.

he wont be an A grade student for long..
Lol ...I did the full anti establishment at school ..
No hat ,mini skirts ,Beatles stockings ,skirt rolled over at the waist ,tie pulled down .Mary Quant haircut .
Have I grown up to be a thug ? No
Have I grown up fairly well educated ..Yes.
I'm sure it's just a passing fad with this lad .We've all had them .
I have a son who went through the punky stage . He has his own company now .
I'm sure if we see this kid in thirty years time ..he'll be a big knob in the City :)
