I've had the same bulbs in my LR ceiling fixtures for over 5 years...not used all the time,but still good value. Other bulbs are lasting 3 years or more in the bathroom and bedrooms. So I have no complaints. As for dimness-I feel some of the comments sound like exaggeration-yes,they are a bit dim,but certainly cause no visual problems, or inconvenience.

EDDIE51 As you probably know I work in a Dementia unit, all our lights in the bathrooms/toilets come on immediately you switch them on as they are compact fluorescent type, however just to confuse the already totally confused we have all the light switches on the>>outside of the doors<<, apparently in line with current legislation on new builds. Even the staff disappear into the loo and a second later you see a hand come out through the door to turn the light on. Those with severe dementia have no chance!!
We actually have these new lights in every room in the house and compact fluorescent lights in the corridors, we have no problems at all with them, we use 18W in the bedrooms and Multiple 23W clusters in the lounges and dining rooms.

Yes they use to. I have two . They are useless. The coating inside the bulb makes it even dimmer. Also they make them by putting the bulb over the spiral which naturally reduces the light further.
I don't know if they are still made. I won't be buying them.

Whether they are an actual con or not, it is clear that the justifications given are total nonsense, and the only conclusion I can think of for imposing this has to be to give an ego boost to those who can control the masses by dictating something, and having the perverted pleasure of forcing all to comply.
Arguments on efficiency ground create minimal justification since it has to assume all energy used that isn't converted to light is wasted. Which, of course, is nonsense. Domestically you turn a light on in the evening when it is cooler anyway, so the minimal amount of energy converted to heat is more likely to be useful. Especially since the nights are longer in the winter when heating is normally required. In commercial premises where they may need to remove heat during a summer day, then the chances are they use florescent lighting already.
The claim that the bulbs last longer is patently untrue. I used to buy decent quality incandescent bulbs, and they would last years. Would be amazed when one blew. I've had a number of these so called long life bulbs blow since they came in. And when they blow it is often with sparks as something screws up/shorts out in the control part. The only way one could conclude that last longer is if one compared to the cheap and nasty (and yet often curiously expensive) brands that seem to be all the shops are left with now.
And one can not seem to get a decent light output from them. Adequate is about the best you can get. Unless, maybe, one goes for the physically large size that would stick out of the lightshade and look awful.
Yes they do contain hazardous material that you should dispose of properly, although I understand the danger is minimal, and I really can't see many folk bothering. They fit in a bin easily enough.
This whole fiasco is a prime example of how the common folk are just pushed around for the fun of it these days, how despite thinking that society makes progress over the years, such incidents show we have not progressed as far as we'd like to think. All those involved in pushing this through oppressive legislation should hang their heads in shame, and go about making the U turn and allowing folk to chose the lighting of their choice, as should be the case. It is blatant government interference in things they should not be ruling on.

Maybe you would care to comment on my experince. I have not had to replace a single low energy bulb in the past 3/4 years and I have 18 both inside, and outside as security bulbs. .
Whereas I used to replace many tungsten bulbs especially the four outside. they were all replaced 2/3 times every winter .
I also had several that shorted out and blew the fuses and others that dropped out of the brass cap/base . All my bulbs were from the top brands . I never bought those cheap imported packs.
You mentioned dimness after they had wamed up. I in fact measured the Lumen output and if you used the 18 or 23 watt ones there was no quantifiable difference. There is one. exception the bulb type i.e.not spiral are much dimmer. May I also point out many of your comments are disputed by many of the posts .

If you have not had to replace a low energy bulb for 3 years then you have been very lucky indeed. If you do not find them to be dimmer, again you have been very lucky. I've yet to find a decent 100w replacement.

As I demonstrated in my earlier post, the saving in energy is absolutely trifling when compared to other far easier measures (e.g. keep your doors shut in winter) that would produce far greater savings.
