...Amy Winehouse has died.

Personally, I'm very sad because it looked like she had sorted herself out. Too much talent, too many demons.

>>>it looked like she had sorted herself out.

But she was booed off stage only a few weeks ago for being drunk on stage and had to cancel the rest of her tour.

So it does not sound as though she had sorted herself out.

Very sad but not unexpected.

I'm very confused.

I caught this on the news. There was a snippet of a drunken crone falling about on some stage somewhere, being picked up and helped off the stage by (presumably) a stagehand. Then the item cut to a street apparently in Camden Town where it seems the said crone had been found dead. I gather from this thread her name was Amy Winehouse.

So I give up.

- Who is (sorry, was) Amy Winehouse?
- What was she doing drunk and incapable on a stage?
-What were the proprietors of the theatre thinking of by allowing her on their stage in such a state?
- What was she doing in Camden Town?
- As tragic as any death is, why should this one be "devastating" (a term I don't think I've heard used to describe any of the recent deaths in Norway)?

The first ten with all five correct answers will be entered in this month's prize draw.
You are always going to get differing opinions here and everyone is entitled to their own. I don't think one should be hypocritical in their beliefs if you have different views on anyone or the subject matter. A death of one so young is always tragic however it occurs, no one takes that away, and what the family must be going through must be horrendous but I do wonder if, like some of us they knew the inevitable would happen though it doesn't make it anymore bearable. I also understand CP's realistic views and opinions, each to his own imo.
Here is a quote from Amy her"I knew I could sing," Winehouse said in a 2004 BBC interview. "But I always thought everyone could sing, that everyone was born with a singing voice. Yes, I can sing, I have a good voice but there's so many people that can and do."

1/ She was a young talented singer/writer
2/ She had an addiction to alcohol and drugs
3/ You need to ask them that...I'm guessing because they made money from the ticket sales??
4/ She lived there
5/ The deaths in Norway are devastating and were described as much in the news this morning and in the newspapers.

What do I win??
Only "devastating" because she was popular as a singer and a celebrity however she acted. The deaths in Norway IMO would be described as devastating in my book as those poor people were gunned down in cold blood.
My god, so talented, what a waste of a special talent.
stupid is what I say and a shame in that where were her family, professional support team, friends etc - unless she had slagged them all off.

Particularly when put in context of what happened yesterday. There could have been a future Abba on the island. The Big A had her chance and blew it - herself. Therefore, excuse the lack of sympathy on this one.

Listen to the album 'Frank' wait an hour, then listen to 'Back To Black'

After that, try to say the words 'Amy Winehouse wasn't takented' and see whether you can keep yourself from blushing.

You may not like her as an artist, you may not like her music or lifestyle, but to call her untalented isn't an opinion - you're stating an opinion as fact (something that I am guilty of by calling her the best British female vocalist of the past decade).

Amy WAS talented. I can't understand what you mean by 'talent'. Tell me - what's YOUR definition of talent?
You state your opinion as fact cp. Here are some facts about Amy.

Feb 2008 saw Amy Winehouse honoured with 5 of the US Recording Academy’s most prestigious awards: Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best New Artist, Song of the Year (Rehab) and Record of the Year (Rehab) at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. This incredible haul makes Amy the first ever British female artist to win 5 Grammys in one night and sees her join Lauryn Hill (1998), Alicia Keys (2001), Norah Jones (2002) and Beyonce (2003) in the elite band of female artists who have won 5 awards in one evening.

The Grammys cap a remarkable 18 months for this hugely talented and unique artist. During that time “Back To Black”, her second album (and the biggest selling UK album of 2007), , has sold over 5 million copies worldwide and turned Amy into one of the hottest stars in the world. Widely regarded as a modern day masterpiece by critics and fans alike the phenomenal UK chart success has been mirrored in the US where “Back To Black” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at no. 7 making Amy the highest debuting British female artist in the history of the US albums chart.

The critical response to the record has been every bit as impressive and in addition to the Grammy’s Amy has picked up a series of awards including a Brit, South Bank Show Award, Ivor Novello, Mojo, Glamour, Elle Style Award, Mobo, MTV Europe’s Artists’ Choice Award and Q Award for Album of the Year. Meanwhile Amy’s 2003 debut album ‘Frank’ has now gone double platinum selling an incredible 300,000 copies in 2007 alone.

New Judge

Listen to the 'Back To Black' album.

It will answer all your questions.

The tragedy of Amy Winehouse is comparable to the tragedy of James Dean - a life cut short (in his case) after completing only a couple of films. With Amy it was drugs, with Dean it was reckless driving.

New Judge - she provided the soundtrack (for many of my peers) of the last decade. Literally every dinner party, barbecue, get-together would have someone putting on an Amy Winehouse album.

She had a cultural impact on the music industry which far outweighs her actual output.

Put another way - within hours of her death, the story was the top trend on Twitter with 10% of traffic mentioning her. There are 200million Twitter users, so that means 20million people were talking about it.

This is BIG NEWS.
What has what happend in Norway got to do with Amy Winhouse?

What happened in Norway was very very sad, but this is a different thread, I thought Amy was too talented to live and I always compared her to Billy Holiday, also too talented. They were both great singers who were too inocent for the pirias around them.

I am beginning to think this is a generational thing - for people between 20 and 45, who are interested in music, this is a big deal. For those outside that demographic, it's a non-story?
sp, I'm 53, so dont use the age thing!!!!!!!
Amy Winehouse has done nothing that countless musicians have done before her and countless more will continue to do long after she has gone. Talent "a special, often creative natural ability or aptitude" Again let me try to make myself clear, within a musical context she is just like many, many, many musicians before her, during her and after her. She offers nothing unique, some of you bang on like she was the be all and end all. She has won awards, loads of musicians have, she has written a few songs, again loads of musicians have. You have to try and understand that she was nothing special, nothing unique and certainly nothing new.
I'm an OAP sp1814 and I adored her music and so do my children in their 50's. Her Back to Black album is the only album I have bought in 20 years. As a devoted opera lover I even surprised myself how strongly I felt about her music. So I'm not sure about the generation thing unless my family is unique - hmm maybe we are:-)
No, no SP, don't fall into the trap of generalisation. OH and I are older than 45 but are wholeheartedly in agreement with you.

In fact OH who is older than me and often t be found in the "grumpy old s*d" bracket, said how sad he was for such a lost talent. And whoever is trying to lay blame with the parents should a little more thoughtful. For they have tried harder than anyone to help her. RIP Amy
Now if it was Katie Mehua, I would be upset - and she has had her fair share of issues too.

If you like her music, it is news, for some others it is not. Sad yes but it doesn't shake my world, so "tuff" The Norwegian situation has far more "relevance."

We are allowed to express opinions here aren't we?
I heard that woman on Sky trying to lay the blame on her father maidup and I thought she was well out of order especially just after he has had the news she has died. If I tell my daughter to do anything she will probably do the opposite and Amy was probably the same. He tried many many times to help her as is well documented.
Craftypig, Amy WAS special, just like those before her (Garland, Joplin, Hendrix, etc) and hopefully those who come after her.

Oh what a mess we made!
What has talent got to do with self abuse? She has probably passed away because of her self inflicted act of drug and alcohol taking. At any age it's awful but in the 20's or younger it's tragic but it was self inflicted, she chose her path in that respect. Talent has nothing to do with how I feel about this case, she should not in my opinion have been revered because her self imposed abuse gave out the wrong impression to the younger generation, that it was "okay to be like that". It is mostly the older generation who feel that it is not okay, the kids will see her as a role model whatever her shortcomings.
