Joe Mott from the Daily Star commenting on Ricky Gervais' recent weight loss suggested that if he were a gay man, one would assume he's dying of AIDS.

Is this funny 'ha ha', or funny 'good God, how did they let this one get printed'?

Very much implied, don't you think?

What conclusion would you arrive at other than a reference to AIDS?
The words "Funny " and Ricky Gervais should not be used in the same sentence

oh yes you can only be "ill" if you're gay, i forgot that rule
I saw an ad in the paper the other day with the new super svelte RG in it... I put it down to bad Photoshop...
That is in bad taste. You have to be careful what you say, quite a few people commented on my SIL's weight loss and assumed she was dieting, but she had cancer, it caused a few awkward moments on both sides.
sp1814 my friends daughter died after losing a lot of weight and looking very frail she did not have aids people use to ask him has she got Anorexia Nervosa this made him very upset.
I forget the medical name for her problem.

I think the 'joke' is in astonishingly poor taste...like the writer thinks that AIDS is somehow a great punchline.
I can't see on what planet that would be funny... and yet somehow, Ricky Gervais as the butt of a bad-taste joke somehow seems like karma to me. But then, I'm not a fan.
Not funny . At bit like RG.
"we are not amused" - quote VR
Gay/AIDS jokes are so 80's.
Couldn't the Star columnist come up with something more original than that?

Of course not, that's why he 'writes' for the Star........
