where was he speaking?
imo, a strange thing to notice .
If it's somewhere like Birmingham, it could be correct.

I don't think we can make a judgement based on a photo showing half a dozen children, but a few years back, half the children in Southwark were classed as black or black British iits probably representative of that particular school.
My opinion was more that it seemed to be being touted as a 'poor'ish school - they hardly looked impoverished. I've never seen pupils at a state school wearing blazers apart from primary ones.
I can't see anything really strange there, in most inner cities there are areas that are predominantly Asian or Black and elsewhere where there are mostly White areas.
If it was the other way round there would be NO questions. Why would there be? This is still a predominately white, Christian country....despite what the Daily Mail says.
Only a racist would ask such a question.

If Mr Clegg were speaking at a school in Chelmford and all the kids were white, I doubt there would be much to comment on.

If Mr Clegg were speaking at a school in Brixton and all the kids were black, I doubt there would be much to comment on.

If Mr Clegg were speaking at a school in Golders Green and all the kids were Jewish, I doubt there would be much to comment on.

So I really don't understand your surprise that in some inner city schools, the vast majority of children are not white.

I can only infer from your surprise that you didn't know that inner cities have large ethnic populations.

Didn't you know this?

Re: blazers - my guess is that the head, knowing that the press would be descending on the school, would have sent letters/emails to parents telling them that full uniforms MUST be worn on that day?

Also, from what I remember - kids from very poor households (such as mone!) got school uniform coupons - so the household income would be irrelevant when it comes to kitting out the kids for school.

Yep well aware sp1814,

I worked in South London for 8 years, just thought a white face could have been in the photo!
Looking at the picture, I can see eight 'black' people – the faces of four in the foreground and four in the background. Then there's Mr Clegg to the right and in the far right-hand corner of the picture there appears to be another white guy looking down at the floor.

Your question is entitled, “Clegg lecturing at a school and....” and your immediate question is “Not one pupil is white...”

So without taking your statements out of context or out of order, you're effectively saying that, 'Mr Clegg is lecturing at a school where not one pupil is white' and you're basing that statement on a photograph in the Daily Mail that shows Mr Clegg (and another unknown white male) with a grand total of eight black pupils...

I think it's fair to say that your assumption could be unfounded as according to Wikipedia, whites make up over 64% of the population of Southwark (2008 estimates). Even if your statement turns out to be true, I fail to see it's relevance.

Here is the website for the Globe Academy in Southwark

As you can see, there appear to be whote children who attend. It is an inner city school in London, one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. I would be more surprised if I hadn't seen plenty of black faces.

/// Only a racist would ask such a question.///

This is a typical comment.

It is not only this school, notice any TV reports, where a politicians is visiting a school, or they have need to show 'in the can library shots' of school classrooms, and the same can be noticed.

Incidentally were all those others racist, to notice that there wasn't any ethnics in Midsommers Murders?
^^^ The people who complained about the lack of ethnic minorities in Midsommers Murders were not racist because they commented on the lack of non-whites in the show. They were just poorly informed; they failed to realise that there are entire communities in the UK today where the the only faces to be seen are 'white' faces. Similarly, there are communities in the UK where only non-white faces are seen. Commenting on an aspect of reality can never be racist in itself.

I think Canary42s comment is misjudged as is the original question.
