Supermarket scales

At my local supermarket you weigh your fruit and veg. yourself at the scales provided. There are now new scales where when you put your fruit or veg. on the scales it detects which fruit or veg. you're weighing! 9 out of 10 it's right but if it's not you just select it yourself. How does it do this???? I might add the fruit / veg. is in a plastic bag when it's being weighed.

I'd guess because all of a certain fruit or veg will individually be in a certain weight range so each total weight must be a multiple of the weight for one of whatever.

Thank you Naz that's exactly it! Quite clever I think. It did have problems with the parsnips but not many people here buy them.

Getting along, taking each day as it comes. Yes, I went back to giving lessons quite quickly to get some prospective (and income) but as yet no new plans just plodding along with what plans we had with house etc. It's a totally different life being on your own but you have to see the good sides of it to keep positive.
