I was just in Asda's a man was walking around quite happily doing his grocery shopping eating a banana, The banana did not belong to one of those bag thingys that have a set price, So how would they work out the price of a banana skin when he went to the check out. ( thats if he put it on there),

I didn't see a pair of scales at the door so he could weigh himself in and out.

1) would you call it theft and could you be prosecuted?

2) Would you let your kids eat the grapes or unweighed fruit in a shoppingmarket before paying?

Until the product has been purchased it does not belong to you, from the Supermarket's point of view it would be theft !

My mum used to let mr hav crisps or a drink and pay for the packet LOL i have been guilty of the odd grape- mabye not a banana! I suppose you could be prosecuted- my friend used to work in asda whilst at uni- said people ate stuff alllll the time x
He might have paid for it before his journey round the supermarket.
It's impolite but not illegal unless he goes beyond the till with no intention of paying. Just to add complexity, he could drop the skin in the shop and be guilty of littering.
Is it possible he walked in with the banana?
I can't imagine a shop would pursue someone for theft of a banana but this is where our standards are slipping - theft is theft whether is is a car or a pen from the office or a banana from the supermarket.

you wouldnot be alowed in to a restaurant and consume your on own food, I just found it a bit weired.
Asda and other major supermarkets should have a flat rate price of £5 pounds for individually eaten bananas.that may be a deterrent.
How do you know it wasn't a banana that already belonged to him?

I left home with 3 bananas in my bag this morning.
I was brought up to believe that it was rude to eat in public.

I still think it is.

Why radiogaga? they sell them lose.
Like I got accused one time in Tescos over a DT newspaper -

"I would have to be a bloody genius to complete the Crossword, the two Sudoku and the Quick Crossword and the 9 letter anagram from picking up the paper to getting to the Checkout"

And, by chance, I had the receipt from the newsagent, having bought a few other things.

Red faces on them and an apology, so all ok in my book.
He could be diabetic...
i wouldn't do it, to me its theft, and no you wouldn't take your own foodstuffs to a restaurant, or should i say i wouldn't, but i have seen that in some pubs,
customers ordered a drink, then sat and ate their shop bought sandwiches, stupid.
Ooooh! ummmm.....good point.....very good point.

In Spain is is common practice and accepted to take your own food into a cafe (not restaurant) and order coffee and eat you own food.
