Trainspotting Soundtrack

I have Trainspotting 1 & 2 on CD and have often wondered how and why the tracks which didn't feature in the film were chosen. Thanks

I recall reading that the writer put songs on the cd that he listened to while writing the story/script, as well as songs that he felt would be apart of the characters lives, even though there wasn't space to put them all in the film.
