The scientific principle behind the microwave was discovered - by accident - in 1946, by Dr Percy L Spencer; but the first domestic microwave was not marketed until 1967. See http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/page/m/microwaveo ven.shtml
Most people in the Uk didn't own a microwave until the mid 1980's when they appeared in the shops
The microwave has been there since the dawn of EM radiation. Microwave ovens however became affordable and popular in the 80s.
