He died on 10.09.1978 of cancer at Bobigny, 3km from Paris. He is buried at Altuona on Hiva-Oa in the Isles of Marquises, French Polynesia. He was 49.

He actually died of a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) though the lung cancer he was suffering from was certainly a contributing factor. For us non-americans, he died on October 9.
