It was by William Orbit. It was titled Barbers Adagio for Strings. Hope that helps
William Orbit released an album called Pieces In A Modern Style with this track on. I'm not sure if its the one your looking for but it is very good.
I have the classical version of this and my daughter told me of the one with synths added as she like that version but there seem to be lots of versions. Some of the ones I found were, Albinoni, Blue Devils, Ferry Corsten remix, John Barry, DJ Tiesto, DJ Skribble, Samuel Barber and it's also on the soundtrack from the film Platoon. So I don't know which is the one you are looking for, but perhaps this might help.
The Ferry Corsten remix of William Orbit's Barber's Adagio for Strings is the most well known version.
