We were out today and on a direction sign was a
yellow square with a red diamond in the middle
but what does it mean ? I can't find it on the
Highway Code site , could it be a holiday

No it was a red diamond in the middle of a yellow
square on a green direction sign , this was on the
A27 west of Brighton
It's a diversion sign. Different symbols and colours are used to clearly identify different routes.

Question Author
It was not a diversion sign as it was on a main
route green sign and there were no road works
just weird and our friends had never seen this
sign before ..maybe Sussex Police will be able
to explain ..
They are actually diversion signs but they are permanent, rather than temporary. They are there in case there is a closure on the main A road or motorway, and they lead you by another route, to the same road that you have been diverted from.
