In the Wiltshire/Somerset area (I think) I remember passing at a junction a Red and White road sign which tell you a direction and distance. It is not a modern sign and I think it had a triangle or circle on the top. Anybody know where it is?

Or it could be Dorset
I think you may be talking about the red signpost on the A31, in Dorset, between Winterborne Zelston and Bere Regis. It is known as Red Post, though I am not certain if this refers to the post itself, or the surrounding area.
eric is correct, that is the best known one in Dorset although there are 2 more . it's called the Red Post because of its colour, has a circle on the top.

I'll have to look out for that PP. The one on the A31 is only about 5 miles from me, locals even call it the red post road.
