Yes - we used to rent a radio too - Radio Rentals, surprise surprise! We rented our first telly from the Coop.
Ooh yes - Rediffusion supplied ours
yes,
we rented a VHS player every Christmas for several years (it was while the format wars were still going, so no point in committing ourselves). That was Radio Rentals too.

There was a rental company called Granada, too.

Their advert went ...

"Great service you get, renting your colour set, from ... Granaaaada!
jeez jane, my ears are bleeding now

I remember ours had a slot meter on it which you put sixpences or shillings in. Think that was from Redifusion.
If a "bird"played her cards right, she would be invited up to my flat in Stamford Hill London and with crisps and tins of beer, she would be allowed to watch my rented TV.
Of course she would have to be an upmarket "bird" to buy beer and crisps for.
lol @ "posh little bustard"

we used to rent our TV from rumbelows
You're pure class sqad.
We had one of those Jan, you used to put half crowns in it so we were very selective about what we watched.
Teles were expensive way back then and that was the only way you could afford them. Nowadays they cost much the same as a Sunday joint of beef! Very few people actually bought a television.

Our first tele was in fact owned back in the early 50's. It had a 9" screen and a magnifier which made the screen12".

I think renting came about when colour tele first came with it's new very expensive technology.
wolf LOL don I no it!
It was a pain craft when the money ran out half way through a programme. Everyone had to search for a shilling.
We rented ours from D E R. Whatever happened to them.
My Dad used to work for television rental company and he used to show us the latest models. Being amazed by teletex was a good moment!
