No,you need to phone your insurers with the details of the car and get a cover note before you can drive it.
most garages will have a policy that covers you for 7 days while you sort one out so you can drive it home but check first

I think NOT - must get your own. I don't think the garage can tax it without your insurance details
Most insurers will give the cover note details over the phone,or even email a copy of the policy details to the garage/dealer for you so that the car can be driven almost immediately after purchase.

MY DAUGHTER BOUGHT A NEW CAR AND WAS GIVEN COVER FOR 7 DAYS
no need to shout.
It will depend on the dealership - some offer complimentary 7 day insurance coverage (e.g. via Norwich Union, Provident), others do not.

Be aware that the excesses on the free policy may be higher than you would negotiate for yourself directly with an insurer.

2ND hand car, NO, NO Insurance, no cover, 6>>8 POINTS, Big Fine is it worth it? If you bye the car contact your Insurance ASAP get it covered, get the name of the person that has taken your details/dept, Ref No/
Being local is not a valid reason for driving without insurance!
when I bought a car recently I phoned my insurance and arranged for cover before driving it home. Some mechanics have an insurance that covers them to drive cars they do not own.

Joko...I bought a car the other day. I arranged the insurance on the net. You have 14 days to cancel and you get a full refund if you do. It took about 10 mins.
do not drive the car until it comes up on here as being insured:

No garage's insurance would cover any driver in any car for 7 days Gina, I think you may have been mistaken.
R1 i am not mistaken, my daughter bought a brand new car and was given 7 days insurance through norwich union via the garage, they arranged it all for her.
OK fair enough it's a specially arranged deal then in her own name etc. The garage's own insurance would not cover it.
That's a good one Geezer. Put my mind at rest as I have no documents yet.
Sometimes garages will sell you short term insurance so you can drive the car, then you get your insurance when you get home.
