A member of the familly is a bit worried because he is not sure if he went through a red light

My question is - if the traffic lights have those cameras on them , does it automatically follow that , ( if he did go through on red ) he would have been snapped ?

No.

The 'cameras' on top of traffic lights are not cameras.
They are sensors to detect vehicles. At quiet periods the lights will not change to green for an empty road.

Cameras to detect jumped lights are set back from the lights.
Some Traffic lights do have cameras but when I have seen them triggered there is still an obvious flash - just like a normal speed camera.
For the last time, this thing on top of a traffic light is a microwave detector NOT a camera.

and this is a traffic light camera that catches you jumping the lights, set as PB says, about 30 feet before the whote line.

"before the white line" even!
stop worrying yourself if it was a camera you would find out within a few days but as every one selse says the thing at the top of the traffic lights is a sensor
and the is usually set a few feet away from the traffic lights
I would be more worried about the fact that "he is not sure if he went through a red light"....Did he have a lapse of concentration or something?
Sddsdean, you are wrong.

It won't be the last time.
Ain't that the truth PB!!
