BMW boot unlocking

I can only open the boot of my Compact by using the remote key. I used to be able to release on the handle - what have i done and how can i remedy it - thanks

you need to insert the key in the bootlid and turn it to the opposite position to what it is in at the moment.
and remove the key.
ie if the lock is at 12..00 move it to 3.00 and vice versa

There's no keyhole on the boot - there's only a handle above the number plate
