possibly a bit yes

ask them what thir hourly rate is and the cost of the part
It does sound a bit steep. i Was charged 150 for a pair doing. i have the 1.9 tdi passat on a v plate. basically the same car. I insisted on vw parts though. as i had tried to do it myself previously. im no mechanic but im no numpty either. needed specialist tools to take the axel out apparently. so i used a aftermarcked boot cut it and glued it back after fitting it. (like the universal ones) it lasted about a year. but then i could afford the 150. the cv joints on them are short and wide. so the uni boot didnt fit. and the local motor factors couldnt find a snugg fitting boot.

sorry im rambling. what im trying to say is get it done properly. its woth it.
hi you can buy a gaiter kit from most car parts places such as halfords thy are already split and you put thm on yourself you wrap around drive shaft a couple of mil at a time thn glue at end you fill with the grease supploed then slide right on and put a cable tie on its really simple and willl save you loads of money thy cost about 15 pounds and that is all you need if you cant do it yourself thn maybe a friend would do it for a drink also to do a cv gaiter should only cost you around an hours labour so add tht up and make up your own mind if thy having you over thnx
