cold starting

i have an n reg escort 1.6i 16v and its a pain to keep the engine running when cold. it starts ok but as soon as i press the clutch to stop, (usually at the first junction i come to) it just cuts out. only does it when the engine is cold, once its been running for 4-5 mins it stops doing it. any ideas what it might be and how it can be fixed cos its driving me mad.

hi i had the very same problem with my v nova .this problem persisted for a year (drove me mad) problem resoled it self when i had to replaced the exhaust for a mot .
after new exhaust was fitted it never stopped again. this might not solve your problem but it solved mine
