Hi, I am shortly going to buy a used car, about 3 or 4 years old and between 5k and 6k. I am not going to trade-in a car in part exchange and also have my own finance arranged, and so I am wondering how much I should be asking for in discount off the advertised price. In the past I have part-exchanged and they always seemed to give me more than the car was worth, I guess that was because the car I was buying was a bit overpriced! Any advice would be most welcome.

It`ll all depend on how much profit they have on each car, obviously the greater the profit the bigger the discount you`ll get. Like anything else its a buyers market out there so be cheeky and ask for at least a grand off ;)
it may be worth getting a fifty quid car and using that for a part x , see what the dealer is offering as a minimum before buying though. some have special offers on.

Thanks for your advice, I will see if they are giving a minimum trade in first, then ask for a bigger discount. I can not believe they would knock off 1000 pounds, but it's worth giving it a go. Thanks
Trouble is, as you do not want the garage finance, they can't make extra profit from you using theirs.

On 5-6k you should be asking for 1k off without a trade in, use that as a starting point.
