road tax display

hi can anyone tell me if it would be legal to display my car tax on right hand side of window or does it need to be left hand side by law

The only reference to this I can find is that the road fund licence has to be clearly visible. This means that, in theory, you could display it on the rear window. However, if you placed it there, or on the right hand side (the drivers side) you may find yourself with more grief than it's worth. The cameras that detect the discs are designed to look for it on the left, the police and traffic wardens may argue that the disc wasn't clearly visible (as they would usually be checking discs standing on the pavement) and the police may argue that it is impeding the drivers vision ~ although they would probably only comment on this if you were involved in an accident.

I don't know if it is still law but the law used to be Lower Left Windscreen.

I cannot see it being changed from that.

You must display this disc on the left-hand side of the vehicle's windscreen.

The DVLA website says "Display your tax disc on the passenger (kerb) side of your windscreen", but it does not say whether this is mandatory. My bet is that if it were manadatory, they'd say so. The tax disc on my motorbike (and many others) is attached to the nearside passenger footrest, and there seem to be no clear rules. The 'clearly visible' sounds just vague enough to be law....

This is the basic rules of road (Car/bike) tax display.

They MUST be followed.

"Display your tax disc
Display a tax disc on the passenger side (kerb side) of the vehicle�s windscreen. If there�s no windscreen or you have a motorcycle or sidecar, display the tax disc on the kerb side of the vehicle.

The tax disc cannot be transferred between vehicles."

So the only way you can get away with not displaying the tax disc on the bottom left side of the windscreen of you car is, take the windsreen out. But remember it is there for safety...LOL

The Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002

Regulation 6. Exhibition of vehicle and nil licences

6. - (3) Each such licence shall be fixed to the vehicle in a holder sufficient to protect the licence from the weather to which it would otherwise be exposed.

6. - (4) The licence shall be exhibited on the vehicle -

(a) in the case of an invalid vehicle, tricycle or bicycle, other than in a case specified in sub-paragraph (b) or (c) of this paragraph, on the near side of the vehicle;

(b) in the case of a bicycle drawing a side-car or to which a side-car is attached, on the near side of the handlebars of the bicycle or on the near side of the side-car;

(c) in the case of any vehicle fitted with a glass windscreen in front of the driver extending across the vehicle to its near side, on or adjacent to the near side of the windscreen;

(d) in the case of any other vehicle -

(i) if the vehicle is fitted with a driver's cab containing a near side window, on that window; or

(ii) on the near side of the vehicle in front of the driver's seat and not less than 760 mm and not more than 1.8 metres above the surface of the road.

6. - (5) In each case referred to in paragraph (4), the licence shall be so exhibited that all the particulars on the licence are clearly visible in daylight from the near side of the road.
