I've just bought a new van - and have read and re-read the entry in the manual - but am still unclear what the button marked 'ASR' does? It seems to be to do with traction and I think should be kept switched on all the time - but it's very unclear when it's on, and when it's off! So - have I got the right general idea about it... and how can I tell whether it's on or off! Thanks

It's anti-spin regulation. Switch it on when you are pulling off on a slippy road.
Like Ethel says its for pulling away in slippy conditions, i have a Vectra SRI with traction control but on my car it is on all the time, pressing the switch as if you were turning it on actualy does the opposite so pressing the switch on turns the traction control off, VW might be the same im not sure maybe worth a quick call to your local VW dealer.
