Most diesels, especially if old, smoke to some degree, hence the 'oil burners' tag.

Blue smoke? It's burning oil and your engine has a problem, probably needs new piston rings, or the turbo seals have gone.

Black? Then most likely either your injector pump is set incorrectly (using too much diesel or mistimed) or you have one or more faulty injectors.

Possible DIY fix: get some injector cleaner stuff from Halfords (or wherever) tip the whole bottle into a quarter-half tank and don't fill up till you have to. At some point, have a sesssion or two of revving hell out of it, to 'blow the cobwebs out'. Be careful if you're engine is old, though, don't over do it!
explain the dangers of smoking to it, then offer to buy it some nicotine patches
Put a nice, clean-burning petrol engine in it in place of that nasty, polluting diesel engine. Smoke and soot is a feature of a diesel engine.
dammit rojash - you beat me to it
