Pajero 4WD flashing

My Pajero 4WD indicator on the dash flashes after I've been driving for a while.
I've heard that there are 2 switches on the gearbox that need checking. Can I access the switches without major surgery in an effort to sort them out? Also, if I engage the 4WD, instead of all 4 wheels showing as engaged, the display only shows 2!!
Finally, does anyone know how to set the throttle and kick-down cables to the correct position because I'm revving high from a standstill and the next gear takes ages to kick in.
Anyone any ideas, please.
