I have recently become friendly with a police officer and he admitted to me that he had 'checked' my file and that I had a file open, where the police where making enquiries into my car being seen leaving the scene of an accident.

I have no idea what this could be refarning to as I have no recollection of being involved in any sort of accident. If i had, I would have done the right thing.

I am now worried that I have done something without realising and am going to get a criminal record.

Your friendly police officer should be a little more circumspect. If he is caught accessing police records without a valid reason he could find himself in trouble. You, on the other hand, are entitled to see any information that the police hold about you. If you visit your local nick I think there is a form you can complete to find out what they hold on you.

Would they not question me as to how I came to think that there was something on my record to start off with.

No, just say you would like to see any information held on you

What could I do if there is something there - I know there shouldn't be. Unless I have done something without realising. I am worried that I may be in trouble, I dont think i have done anything wrong.

This sounds like a wind-up as your Police Oficer 'Friend' has no authority to inform you about any files he has read.

Confront him or her and inform them that you are going to question this information at the police station. This should put an end to your worries as like 'JudgeJ' states, they can get into serious trouble.

People make mistakes like this all the time.

Some years ago I had a little visit from my friendly local special branch because somebody had seen my car "acting suspiciously" and thought they heard someone mention a bomb.

They asked a load of questions and phoned my work and eventually went away - It turned out I'd been doing a scavenger hunt and someone had an overactive imagination.

I expect I've an incredibly thin MI5 report somewhere

Cars are often registered in batches especially at busy times of year so it's quite common for 2 identical cars to have number plates that only differ by 1 character.

It might not even have been your car.

No - he said he had checked me out on the data base and i was being investigated.

Where would i stand if this is true and i get a knock on my door?

He's winding you up. If the police were genuinely investigating a hit & run you would already have had a knock on the door. Either ignore it or do what smptrds suggests.
Question Author
Would i be informed if i was being investigated by the police?

Yes you would be informed as no investigation of this kind would begin without firstly questioning you and giving you the opportunity to confess. Thus saving them time, effort and money

I agree with mdoo98, he's pulling a fast one in an effort to pull you!

Just one further point. This is so unlike anything a police officer might say and do. Are you sure he really is one?

A notice of intended prosecution is not strictly needed in this case, but in practice they would send you one within 14 days. You would also have been questioned by now.

I think mdoo98 is right, and somebody is trying to get into somebody's knickers.

Thanks all - Im still stressing about it though!!!
personally i would report him. The simple fact that the man is accessing your file and wants to know more about you just seems odd. He might be trying to impress you or use it to his advantage and take advantage of you. Keep away from him and if he keeps on, just remind him of he recent dispatches programme on coppers and how an under cover reported found that coppers were being racist, not taking emergency calls and ask him if he wants to see his face in the paper for harrasing an innocent women with his bull schit. Keep away from him love!
