Do I need a Warranty from the dealer ( £999 for four years) when I buy a car, or should I just get full cover from AA or RAC? Thanks all.

Also if I take out a warranty, can I have the car serviced elsewhere?
You would have to the terms of the warranty re servicing elsewhere.

I wouldn't buy an extended warranty but many people prefer to
If you go for the warranty, does it cover actual breakdown or non-starting...rather than just the repairs?
You could save yourself a packet on breakdown cover by using Start Rescue rather than AA/RAC...Which? Recommended and very good reviews.

What is the point of a Warranty if I have cover elsewhere?
The warranty should cover parts and labour for big problems which could cost a bomb (but beware of exceptions)
Breakdown cover usually deals with smaller problems and gets you to a garage...but doesn't cover the coast of major repairs.
Breakdown cover doesn't cover the cost of repairs. If the engine blows up or the CV joint goes you get a big bill
You could pay for quite a lot of faults if you kept the £999. Chances are when you claim on the warranty they will find a clause in the small print to refuse to pay.
Demand a shorter guarantee for free.
Is it a brand new car?
The warranty on a used car is probably insurance-based...and like most insurance , you way up the risks against the premium paid.
Sod's Law means...if you buy the warranty - you may never need it.
If you don't buy it - you'll have a big problem and wish you had!
Decisions, decisions...
barry...the dealer is asking £1000 for a warranty.
Buying the warranty means, in effect, you are spending £1000 on repairs in the next 4 years. There will almost certainly be other repairs which are not covered by the warranty (brakes, tyres, clutch etc).
i personally do not rate extended warrantees. I am currently trying to wrangle with the warrantee company over a policy taken out in june this year, where the owner has subsequently died and the car needs to be sold as part of the estate. The warranty cost £800 but does not make the car £800 more valuable so in essence it's £800 wasted
I know the dealer is asking £999 for the warranty - they can be offered on new and used cars.
It is a rare warranty that be transferred to a new owner, bednobs.
That's another good point raised - if you don't intend keeping the car for four years the warranty is pointless, smurf.
That's just an unfortunate event, bednobs, nothing to do with warranty.
no, i know it's nothing to do with the warranty. the warranty can be transferred apparently, but it doesnt mean i can sell the car for £800 more, so in that way it was a waste of money
You are lucky it can be transferred, not such a waste after all - a bonus for the buyer
i am awaiting their response on the whole can the executor get a pro-rated refund thing
