I have just bought a 2001 Ford Focus and the previous owner has lost the remote central locking Key fob. I know the dealers will fix this for me for about 60 but does anybody know if I can buy a second hand one (probably off ebay!) for a fraction of the price and program it myself? Aparently there are two different types. PLEASE HELP. Thanks, Michelle

The key assembly comes in 3 parts, a battery, a key and a button module. You will definitely need a new key and battery. The module of a second hand one will almost certainly be of no use unless it is nearly new so it looks like you stuck with buying a new one. It is possible to program it yourelf but it is complicated and Ford will not offer you any instructions, so you will need a dealer to do it for you. Either way you will certainly need the spare key, a) to identify the key to buy for your car and b) to program the new one.

The dealer will almost certainly try to charge you to program the key (claiming he needs special software and a laptop, which is rubbish). Believe me it takes about 3 minutes but you will need the spare key to do it.
